This was both deliciously dark and sweetly sappy at the same time and I loved it. Ryder and Wotan were precious af and I loved their journey.

The spice was top notch and the storyline was great. I enjoyed all the secrets that were unlocked. Especially Rune’s! I can’t wait to learn more about him and what his story is.

If you sweet, mildly dark paranormal MM romance then I highly recommend this book! It was short but action-packed and so so good!!

WOTAN • RYDER

WARNING! THIS BOOK HAS DARK TRIGGERS THAT SHOULD BE READ WITH CAUTION!

Hunt the Wood: An MM Red Riding Hood Retelling {Beautiful Nightmares Book 1}:

Rating: 4.5

Opener

When I first saw the cover (fell in love with it!) and title being a MM darker retelling of Red Riding Hood? Absolutely had to try it out! Very happy that I did and could definitely see myself rereading this! Especially for Daddy Wotan! With this being dark of course, make sure to read the trigger warnings before reading this! Be an adult about it!

 Positives:

I know what made me beyond glad to have read this book was: {how much of an asshole Wotan was, how scary his demeanor and powers were, how much of an alpha male and bully he was, cruelty, dark loose retelling, torture-murders, dubious and non consent, filthy-filthy smut, humor, and how possessive Wotan over Ryder}! I loved their pairing! With how submissive Ryder was and of course, how majorly dominant Wotan was, was very hot to read! Especially their sex scenes, had me blazing! Also loved the overall dark tone to the story. From Wotan to even the world itself, was great reading how ruthless and tyrannical he was! Again with Wotan’s ability, loved how dark and powerful he was! Then with how much of a bully Wotan was, and forcing/controlling Ryder most of the times, loved it a lot! I also will say I adored how masculine both of them were! From their muscled size, brutish demeanor, monster cocks, and overall roughness!

 Improvements:

Although I wonderful time reading this story, I will say some aspects that prevented this from being a 5 star read was: {how naive Ryder was, Tower being to handsy with Ryder, overuse on swallowing, and Ryder’s grandmother death being lackluster}. Ryder was not only naive with believing his grandmother cared for him, but with Wotan as well since Wotan was a dick (which I loved). Just annoying how easily he would lust over Wotan to only embarrass himself later on when Wotan acts smugly unaffected. As for Tower being handsy, with how possessive Wotan was, I anticipated that he would threaten him, hell anyone for even looking at Ryder (again, highly possessive alpha male). He didn’t do so until later on when Tower was helping Ryder out, which in itself confused me as to why Ryder did not talk with Wotan about the problem. Lastly, as for Ryder’s grandmother, I felt the climax which led to her death was lacking and simplistic. Other than these issues, I still had a immaculate time reading about these guys!

 Recommendation:

I highly recommend checking this out! As well as the series since they are all great MM loose retellings! Especially if you are looking for filthy smut and dark alpha males to swoon over! Very glad to have brought this in paperback for my bookshelf! Great job Fury & Pennza! Happy reading!

Waton and Ryder are the epitome of insta love and magic dicks. It’s a fairytale world so I’ll allow the magic dicks fixing all of our problems. Waton has all of the trappings of a dark haired brooding villain who has a cinnamon roll heart for his true love. Ryder is a walking billboard for family trauma, so naturally he finds the first red flag he can and falls head over ass in love, we love that for him. It was super fun to learn about this world and to help introduce us to other characters who may be seen in future books.

I enjoyed this darker MM retelling of Red Riding Hood.

Ryder is the son of a powerful witch line. Except in this world witch powers are passed down through the female line, and so sons tend to get very little or no magical powers if they're born into a witch line.

Ryder doesn't have many powers, although he is a "Cassandra" meaning he can see into people's futures.

It is seemingly the only reason his grandmother has kept him alive all these years since his parents' death. That he's somewhat useful.

Wotan is a supernatural creature that came through 'The Veil' when it collapsed almost 2 centuries ago, during an apparent nuclear war between humans.

The creatures beyond the veil, could apparently slip into the human world before it collapsed, but with the collapse they were able to take over the human world. And apparently save it, as the veil collapsing would have been the end of all humans.

Now, there are several "syndicates" ruled by very powerful beings. Not gods, but kind of? Wotan is very powerful, but he's not a "god" necessarily. But there are 4 syndicates, each representing Earth, Fire, Water and Air.

Wotan is the leader of the Earth Syndicate and the Wild Hunt. Ryder's grandmother lives in 'the Wood' which resides in Wotan's territory.

And all this resides in what used to be New York City, which is now just called the 'Hallows' and Ryder himself lives in the "Free Zone" which is the only place humans can reside and not be under any of the Syndicate's rule.

But when Ryder is summoned by his grandmother, who is very powerful and dangerous and not someone you deny, Ryder risks it all by going to Wotan to try and ask for permission to go through his territory to where his grandmother resides.

Of course it doesn't go well, but Ryder is determined, and he tries to go anyway. When Wotan of course captures him, the sizzling connection between them blossoms into more.

I liked their connection a lot, and the sex was sizzling hot. So good. The story kept me invested and it was such an interesting retelling.

Wotan is obviously meant to be the wolf. Except in this Red Riding Hood falls for the wolf and the grandmother is plain evil. And also the wolf has a softer side that comes out only around Red Riding Hood, of course.

I enjoyed all of that so much.

I do think more could have been done to get these two to the "I love you" stage, especially with Wotan. He was getting there, but I didn't feel he'd gotten soft enough, let his walls down enough with Ryder to get to the "I love you" place. Then a little too quickly he was already there and didn't feel quite earned. Hence my star off.

But otherwise, I very much enjoyed this. I LOVED the steam, the possessiveness, the size difference - Ryder isn't even a small person, Wotan is just HUGE - and the romance. While it moved too fast to the "I love you" stage, I did enjoy a lot of the build up and once they were there, I enjoyed that too.

Definitely worth a read, I think. I will be reading more of this series, for sure. The next one looks promising with Tower, the vampire almost as powerful, if not as powerful, as Wotan. Definitely one for me to pick up.

Onto the next!

I did enjoy Hunt the Wood, but I thought it really didn’t use its premise to its full potential. This is a dark MM romance retelling of Little Red Riding Hood. Had it not stated this was a retelling, I would not have noticed at all as it didn’t actually resemble that story in any way. The premise of the book actually sounded pretty good, but the plot felt rushed and in place of development there was sex instead. The spice was definitely dark, but I don’t think it was as sexy or alluring as it could have been. The “Red” character was actually pretty developed with a backstory and compelling arc, but the same cannot be said about the “Wolf” character. Maybe I’m expecting too much out of the book, or if it really was just meant to be erotica with some plot, but I just wanted more out of it. The preview of the next book on the series included was actually way more interesting and I may still check it out.
