I loved the tv series and this was a very good companion piece.

Underwhelming

After watching the series it really sparked my curiosity to know more about this incredible lady's life. In essence, I thought this book would have gone into more detail on the actual diary entries that Lister spent her whole life writing. But because it was a series tie in I felt it was more of a general overview of her life. I felt that the writing was quite stiff and as a result, it took me longer to get through than I would have liked.
My favourite parts were the diary extracts, especially the real chunky ones. I kind of felt like an opportunity was missed to do an in-depth analysis of the entries, but again this was not the book's intention.
This is a good starting point for Anne Lister's life in more general terms. It goes into quite a lot of detail into her background in business and also her family. I really wanted an in-depth analysis of her lesbianism but I suppose there was more to her than just that.

A great companion to the series. It follows mostly what the first season covered, time and story wise, but also gives an intro to Anne's life and a brief accout of its end.

But beyond that, it was thrilling to see so much of Anne's own words and to follow her story. In my own attempts to find and learn about queer history, Anne Lister was unknown to me before Gentleman Jack. And now, I am delving into more books and podcasts about it, just to be connected more with such a strong, layered and well documented person in queer history.

While it was an enjoyable read, I have to admit that I enjoy watching the series a lot more. I can’t help but feel the book was long winded at points even though in reality, only a few years of Anne Lister’s life were covered. Was quite disappointed that after reading a whole book about the progression of the relationship between Anne and Ann, there were only about 10 pages between their marriage and Anne’s death (spoiler?), making it feel quite rushed.

I would love to read about the period in which the two were married and living together at Shibden, but maybe that’s a possibility for season 2?

I think I'm mainly disappointed with this book because I didn't understand exactly what it was when I picked it up. Since it's a companion book to the TV series, it only covers the short period of Lister's life that the show does, with a brief background summary of...everything else. For what it was, the book was interesting, especially since I haven't seen the show yet. It does make me want to seek out more of Lister's actual diary covering more of her decades of writing, though.

Light and fun, a sort of more detailed walk through the TV series – you'll definitely need to read the letters and other historical work about Anne Lister if you want to study her character and person in more depth.

I didn't realize this was a movie until someone told me. Anne Lister was an interesting person and her interest in medicine intrigues me. I wonder why she didn't pursue it more because other women were studying science. All we got was that she was a woman so couldn't pursue this line. The book focused more on her sexuality.
