I love stories that take place within a short period - SUWHB unfurls over a Memorial Day weekend. I liked June Bloom.

Comedy is not always funny. Do not go into this book thinking you're getting a light comedy or a book about the sordid underbelly of late night TV, because you will be disappointed. What you will get is a meditation on struggling to find your identity--when your identity is synonymous with your fame (as it is in Hugo's case) and when you feel like your identity should already be set and you're still trying to figure yourself out (as it is in June's case).

Somers handles the relationship between Hugo and June perfectly and while there will probably be readers who disagree, I think the ending was perfect.

Recommended for readers who:
* Like books with the action constrained by a specific time period (a weekend) and setting.
* Don't care if the characters are not always likable
* Are interested in the darker aspects as comedy

I hated it. There just didn’t seem to be a point to the book.

I've been listening for over an hour and I just don't care...nothing about either of the main characters has piqued my interest enough to continue.

I liked the idea of the story: an aspiring comedy writer gets taken under the wing of a famous TV icon, maybe we see a soft side of him the media doesn’t portray, maybe a sweet unexpected friendship blooms. But I was confused by June and Hugo’s relationship from the get-go and only felt more lost as the story progressed. The characters’ conversations were strange and wordy… Frankly, nothing really happened besides a fun few hours at a bar and weird sexual tension between 29yo June and both a 17 year old and a 65 year old…Which leads me to say this book contained one of the most ~cringe~ sex scenes I’ve ever read.

I really wanted to love this book more - it wasn’t bad, it wasn’t great. It does do a great job at showing the flawed side of celebrities, showing they’re just as flawed and in need of affection/attention/love as the rest of us. I just couldn’t shake the creepy, daddy issue vibe of the book. Blech.
