I recently had to hand this book to a younger colleague who had no idea what I meant when I said "some days are like that, even in Australia".

Another author who I enjoyed as a kid! I always had my nose in a book

This book is for anyone who's ever had a terrible, horrible, no-good, very bad day.

Re-read in October 2017
One of my favorite children's books growing up. I still quote Alexander on the regular, because I've never grown out of the terrible, horrible, no good, very bad days. I enjoyed this re-read and think it would be a great book for a read-aloud. What kid couldn't relate?

As a grown adult, I still quote this book often.

Cause sometimes they happen, and it's nice to know they don't just happen to you -- sometimes they even happen in Australia.

I read this a thousand times as a kid. My dad just gave me a copy as a gift, and it's just as good as I remember it!
I don't know how aware of it I was as a kid, but I really get a kick out of how most of what went wrong that day was very easily preventable. It's a good reminder when I'm grumpy that it's probably at least 80% my fault. (:

The main reason that I think this book is so awesome is that it is so easy to relate to as a kid. Chances are, you're day was really not that bad. Yeah, maybe you woke up with gum in your hair (after you fell asleep with gum in your mouth) and your teacher does not dig your drawing of an invisible castle (which may just be a blank piece of paper) but chances are your day was reeeeeally bad. HOWEVER. Even though a lot of dumb things happened (some of which were your fault anyhow) you are crabby and miserable and 8 years old and now you are given a hero and a vocabulary for it. You can just scream, "I THINK I'LL MOVE TO AUSTRALIA," and your mom will know what you mean. She will comfort you and tell you that even Australians have bad days.
