Thought it would mostly be folklore or myths of indigenous peoples, instead, mostly just stories of horrible things that happened to people

Each short story was laid out for the reader. There was no working out nuances of themes, because honestly, there wasn't much nuance there. Because each story was less than 20 pages there wasn't much time to develop characters, plots, or themes. I just found everything on the nose, not scary, and a little boring.
If you had no knowledge of colonialism and Canadians history with Indigenous people, then maybe some things would be surprising or eye opening. But as someone with basic knowledge, I didn't get much out of this book. I found many of the stories not very well written (though some were well written).
I was hoping to feel the creep factor while reading these, but they were so heavy handed I just couldn't get into the scariness/creepiness of them.
I jumped to the back and read Limbs by Waubgeshib Rice and it was the best of the stories I read, a classic horror tale.
However it was not enough to make me want to finish the rest of the stories.
One plus was some of the indigenous folklore was cool.

What a fun, scary book of short stories. Definitely not stuff I could read before bed, but had a blast picking this up.

Highly enjoyed, highly recommend. Dark fiction is definitely a better descriptor tham horror as the stories span genres.

Huge diversity of stories, locations and villains, from traditional myths, colonialism to regular old people and the protagonists themselves. Pretty much every story was a winner and several sat with me long after and made me think.

Book : Never Whistle At Night
Author : Shane Hawk & Theodore C. Van Alst Jr
Pub Date : 19 Sept 2023

Thank you NetGalley, Penguin Random House, Vintage, & the author for the opportunity to read and review this book.

I have become more and more obsessed with books filled with short stories. There is something about a book with a variety of stories. Do you know what I love even MORE than a book filled with short stories?? A collection in one amazing book filled with mysterious horror short stories written by multicultural writers. These stories are amazing. Each of them carried some sort of different eerie vibe to them and some of their culture. I tried to pull out favorites but I have to say that literally every single one of these I loved equally.

Each of them carried some sort of different eerie creepy twisty vibe that makes you gasp, eyes widen & sits you in shock with that goosebump feel. I am so happy that I got he chance to read this collection because these are something that I can keep going back to read through time here and there and I cannot wait to share these with my book friends when the collection is released. An absolute must have/must read.
