The Hanging Tree by Ben Aaronovitch

Marvelous. Peter continues to have a hazardous but fascinating time encountering the fantastical and magical in London whilst solving murder mysteries, attempting to apply science and police procedure to the absurd, and introducing the reader to snippets of London's history and architecture. The overarching plot that has continued through the series has some appreciable momentum in this entry as well. A good balance of wry asides and moments with Nightingale and other recurring characters. I love this world, I love how Aaronovitch writes, I'm happy to continue in this series. Also happy to find that the library not having the audiobook for this book was a blip, and having put a hold on the next in the series, I can look forward to being regaled with the future adventures of Peter Grant in the mellifluous tones of Kobna Holdbrook-Smith once again. 🥰

Book 6 of the Peter Grant series is a solid entry.

Peter himself continues to grow as a character and a police officer. The Folly's changing position and the wider Met understanding of their existence continues to play a part as well. Most importantly, the saga of the Faceless Man and Leslie May has some major advancements.

Another fantastic book!! Big on the development of characters and overarching plot, which is the joy of being this deep into a series.

Really liked this one. The action starts off with the death of a teenager from an accidental drug overdose .... and Tyburn wants Peter involved since her daughter was present. Nothing goes according to plan, but in the ensuing investigation the Faceless Man starts making appearances, a little chaotically off-beat. More Americans show up, each group a little more incompetent and too reliant on guns than the last, and Agent Kimberly Reynolds re-appears to liaise with Peter. It's smart and funny and full of nerd-references, fast-paced and satisfying.

Well, that was a truly satisfying and rollicking read! I was swept up in the current of plain ol’ fashioned police procedural, river gods and goddesses, faes and magicians. Ben Aaronovitch’s series featuring Peter Grant and his boss, Nightingale, has grabbed my interest and I can now say I’m an Urban Fantasy fan not just a Mystery fan. If you haven’t dipped your toe in this genre, don’t hesitate, jump in!
