A father takes his young daughter up to the "tops of trees" so she can see more of the world around her than the refugee camp they live in.

Kalia is born in a refugee camp in Thailand, after her family, ethnic Hmong, fled there. She has never known anything else. So, it is not unusual for her to ask her father, when she is four years old, if the whole world is a refugee camp.

How can her father explain? They are not allowed to leave the camp. So, he takes her up into the tallest tree in the camp, so she can see the world beyond, see the sky, see the birds, see the mountains, and the world outside.

This is based on the author's life, as she too was born in a camp, and she too had her father climb a tree with her to show her the world beyond.

Sweet way to teach about refugees, and what life is like, waiting to move on. And so good that it is told from a child's point of view, with child like questions.

Thanks to Netgalley for making this book available for an honest review.

This beautifully illustrated, moving picture book is based on the author's childhood experience of growing up in a refugee camp. The book portrays details related to life in a refugee camp, what it means for a child to grow up without any sense of the world beyond, and the sacrifices that parents make to help their children have the best possible chance at life.

This book has wonderful art and text, and powerfully conveys both the authors' personal experience and elements that universalize to refugees everywhere. I would highly recommend this to families, classrooms, and libraries, and am grateful that I had a chance to read it.

I received a temporary digital copy through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

This book is in one word stunning . The story is so wholesorm and heart warming , We follow a little girl Kalia who has lived in a refugee camp in Thailand since she can remember . The people of Thailand were keeping the members of the Hmong tribe captive . Kalia is full of joy and hope and she asks her father if all the world was a refugee camp , to this he takes her to the trees and shows her the wide expanse of the beautiful world that awaited her beyond the refugee camp . I can only imagine what a exciting view it might have been for little Kalia from the top of the trees .
The illustrations of this book were beyond amazing , each page was so detailed and well thought of , the colour scheme was also on point . Highly highly recommend it .
Thank you to Netgaley for an arc of this book in exchange for my honest opinions .
