One Step Behind

Henning Mankell

Audiobook that we enjoyed thoroughly. Wallander is an eminently human detective, struggling with his job and his health and family at various points. It's always interesting to listen to his self-talk about the thing he's trying to remember.

In this case, he works hard to connect several disparate murder cases. Sweden's most notorious serial killer - and he ends up being a postman. Go figure. Wallander struggles with self-doubt and lack of sleep, but nonetheless, solves the case and catches the killer.

Mankell's mysteries are always good, but this one seemed especially intriguing. First of all Kurt Wallander has discovered he's diabetic, but for reasons he can't explain he feels ashamed about this, and is trying to hide it from everyone. In the midst of his worry about his own health, three young people are missing presumed dead, and one of his own co-workers has his/her head blown off with a shotgun, making the team realize that the two cases are probably related, and therefore the three young people are much more important than previously anticipated. A good mystery, a scary killer, some clever stuff on Wallander's part. I love how Mankell intertwines the lives of the detectives into how they do their jobs, and the clear example of team detecting, as opposed to the lone ranger type detective novels.

By far my favourite Wallander book, at least from those I read to this day. Mankell's style always manages to captivate me, but there was something special about the contrast of the romantic Midsummer's Night and the cruel reality of the murder, and Wallander's disgust and dread.
Something about it still haunts me today (years after reading it) and I still have very vivid pictures of scenes in the book in mind, when only reading the so familiar (because recommended so often) German title.

4,5 stars!
