I hung in until the end, but the characters and storylines of this book didn't grip me as much as I'd hoped. I enjoyed reading the accents of the characters and appreciated the idea the author was working towards but it fell short of being a 'good read' for me. It was OK, but allowed me to fall asleep at a reasonable hour each night rather than keep me up wanting more.
This was a really sad book. And not sad like it made me cry, but sad like I just felt really depressed the whole time I was reading it, because their lives were all so tragic and it almost felt too real to be enjoyable. There were some interesting parts of it, like I enjoyed the Northern accents and I like the picture it painted of lower-middle-class life in the 90s in the North of England. But overall it was just too sad and I found the changing perspectives difficult to track at times. (Karen & Charlotte's in particular - it was easier to see when it was Nan narrating.) Not one I'll be reading again.
I had a hard time with this book. There was simply too much swearing for my taste and the sex was a bit too crude. However, the relationship between these generations of women spoke to my heart. I wouldn't recommend it because of the language, but still I can't say I didn't like the story and the characters.. because I really did.

The perspective switches between the grandmother, the mother, and the daughter. When following the grandmother's perspective, the text is written in an accent, making it difficult to follow.
I wasn't a fan of the book, I didn't connect with the characters until 2/3 into the book. Even when following their perspective the characters felt 1-dimensional.

A little more teen fiction than I realized. But the character's and story were interesting.
Maybe I loved this book so much because I'm from the Wigan area and could identify with so much of it. It's hilariously written and just hits the spot.
Cute story about the life of three women: a grandmother, a mother, and a daughter. At times the book was confusing because it switched POV's quite a lot and sometimes it was hard to figure out who's head we were in. Also, I felt that parts were very slow moving. I actually enjoyed the side characters a lot. Steve, the father, was hardly in it, but left an impression after every scene he was in. Daniel was a constant presence and I loved his character, sweet and adorable, but also very loyal. I was slightly disappointed that he wasn't mentioned in the epilogue as I wanted to know if he ended up keeping his promises and staying with Charlotte.
