A really fun enemies to lovers story, with compelling political intrigue and a complex, intriguing cast of characters!
(I had to make a spread sheet to keep track of all of the characters but that was fun!)

Absolutely loved it.
Lots of confusing politics, scheming, and conniving. Also an abundance of characters, so it was, at times, a bit tough to keep up.
I’m a sucker for huge companies/kingdoms/systems with ridiculously long job titles and unclear chains of command etc. So, I loved there being a character named Xue Xiuzhuo also known as the Chief Supervising Secretary of the Office of Scrutiny for Revenue.
And yes, the enemies to lovers type of deal was very much to my liking. And to me at least Xiao Chiye seems like a really soft and caring person, setting aside his cold, hard crust.

If I had a dollar for every time that Xiao Chiye popped a boner because of Shen Zechuan's neck, I'd be rich.
The political intrigue of this was DELECTABLE. I love seeing a good chessboard of characters maneuver around like this, and I'm especially a fan of two youngsters starting off as talented (and lucky) pawns that grow into these scheming players themselves. As much as I was kicking my feet over their gay shenanigans, this was much heavier on the plot and story, and character development was tantalizingly woven in between this careful stage setting instead of making their budding relationship the focal point. Big shoutout to the two roof guards who absolutely shipped the hell out of the leads though. I'm very invested in where all this politicking goes and what it will eventually mean for Shen Zechuan and Xiao Chiye.
