once you get past the dark academia character doing dark academia things, in a dark academia setting, in a dark academia manner, the story gets deeper and way more interesting than i thought it would. i'm still not sure how i feel about the ending, but god i love complex sapphic relationships.

god i LOVED this! a truly lovely combination of mystery, thriller, and lesbian romance that i so desperately have craved in a novel these days. this feels very much like a gay YA version of the secret history so far as the basic vibe. maybe it wasn't written like poetry, per se, but it's YA so i wasn't expecting much but Lee killed it by pulling some phenomenal one liners and having a brilliant structure for the story. i was worried i wouldn't enjoy this, and i am so so pleasantly surprised. definitely a lot of fun, and a perfect read for early fall, with some wicked twists.....

Conflicted on this one. Loved the creepy, witchy, dark academia aesthetic of it all, but the pacing kind of felt...all over the place? Not much happened for the first 3/4 of the book, and then when things got really exciting and tense and holy-hell-what's-going-to-happen, it just went by so super quickly. Also, Ellis absolutely RADIATED "Alexa's wretched ex-friend" vibes, probably because they're both smarter-than-thou gaslighters (Ellis would definitely be mean to me about my job as a librarian! Just saying!), and I liked that because of how real it made her feel to me. But also, dang, I really should have read this book BEFORE befriending that person. Live and learn.

This is like if a book was directly specifically created to appeal to me in all aspects so of course I loved it

Spoiler“Don't you ever wish you could go back? To some other time, when things were a little wilder. When the rules were a little less clear.”
“Maybe. I hadn't really thought about it. I suppose it depends on where I was, too. I wouldn't want to get burned at the stake as a witch.”

“I'd have smoldered at the stake right next to yours, no doubt.”

Thought the characters were a bit whiny.
