Absolutely amazing. One of my favorites of Louise Penny’s Inspector Gamache series yet.

As other reviews are saying, this is a departure book. I appreciate the risks Penny takes in this one, both with the story line and her beloved characters (The past of the crazy poet, Ruth! Gamache as a retiree!). The last 100 pages are riveting, but the middle seemed to meander a bit, and I started to lose patience with some of what seemed like manufactured drama among the inhabitants of Three Pines. Still, deep characters, interesting plot. Of course, I will be coming back for more!

Penny's Gamache series always hits that perfect balance of cozy and intellectual mystery. This installment has maybe one or two too many balls in the air being juggled and a couple of all too obvious clues followed by obscure conclusions that come out of thin air. But overall an enjoyable read.

This one was a slower start for me and I was surprised I was having a hard time getting into it at first. I think it was because it was “the boy who cried wolf” trope and also just introduced us to a new set of characters from three pines that hadn’t been mentioned before so it took a bit to adjust. Ultimately it was really good and fascinating. Loved the historical fiction aspect especially!
