Not sure what it was about this book, but it just did not grab my attention. I wanted to DNF it several times and didn't just because I was holding out hope based on the other books that I read that he co-authored with Becky Albertalli ("What If It's Us" and "Here's to Us"). There were moments that captured my attention, like Mateo coming out of his shell and becoming more comfortable as well as building his relationship with Rufus. The concept of someone receiving a call telling them what day they are going to die is crazy and the whole culture is just centered around that.

I absolutely loved this book. I know many people didn't like it, because there was very little plot/it wasn't fast-paced, and they were right in a way. This book doesn't really have a thriller plot. No one is taking down governments or trying to solve a murder, and it's pretty slow-paced. I, however, loved it. Without having to worry about plot twists, the characters take center stage. We see their flaws, their lives, their connections, and the way they love.

The book follows the two main characters, Rufus and Mateo, who meet each other on the day they both die. They live in a world where the day you will die, you get a call at midnight, informing you to make the most of your time. Rufus and Mateo have both received the call, and they meet up trying to find a "Last Friend." The book takes place throughout one day. Rufus and Mateo sift through their memories, make new ones, and break each other out of their respective shells. Every so often, the book will give us a pov of a seemingly unrelated character, only for all the characters we have been introduced to create a storyline where they all play a part in the inevitable finale.

It's a beautifully written story on life, death, human nature, love, and how our decisions can affect the world. Also, ITS GAY AS HELL, AND ITS BEAUTIFUL!

Cried on about 20 seperate occasions. So so good tho, Silvera is an amazing author and really leaves you feeling like you know the boys. SO SAD but the concept is like nothing I’ve read before and was so so interesting to think about!! Love it!

I found it kinda hard to like Rufus. The way the author conveyed the way he spoke didnt seem realistic for me personally. I really liked Mateo though. He was by far my favorite. The premise of story was kinda interesting but i felt maybe it couldve been stretched out to a week rather than a day. It made the connection of the two boys not feel as genuine to me because how well can you really know someone in one day? I know they mentioned that but still i couldnt get past that. Also if i have to read Rufus say “mad” one more time imma rip my hair out.
i hope the tea mateo was gonna make was bomb as fuck
