Incredible book. At times it was hard to listen to due to how heavy the subject matters were and it was necessary to step away sometimes. I learned a lot about the brain, myself, childhood, and possibilities. As an actor, reading about theatre and the positive work it can do with trauma made my heart sing. The arts can be such a blessing and so many don’t even see it or are so quick to cancel it when funding is tight. Highly recommend this book.

I think trauma is an important topic for everyone to understand, at least to some extent, especially since our current systems often fail to acknowledge or address its long term effects. Odds are we’ve all either experienced trauma or know someone who has. I found this book helpful because Dr. van der Kolk describes trauma and its effects on the body in a way that’s easy to understand and provides in-depth examples of various treatments methods (other than medication) that have proven effective for many patients. My big takeaway from this book is that the road to recovery and healing isn’t always a straight path. Some things work for some people that don’t work for others. It’s important to find what treatment works for you. I also learned a lot about how trauma can affect behavior, how medication is often overprescribed, and much more. Very fascinating and informative read.

The information is so important, but I found most of the storytelling to be either unnecessary or upsetting. It made an already lengthy book so much longer.

Lots of triggers, lots of self-indulgence by the author, and not nearly as enlightening or informative as I'd hoped.

I'm sure there are better books on this subject.

I’ve recently new diagnosed with PTSD and have found this book to be extremely informative. Whilst I’m not a psychologist, my bachelor’s degree did include a couple of introductory psychology courses. Whilst this prior study may have supported my understanding and following of some particular chapters, I still think that’s this book is widely accessible to people without prior knowledge of psychology.
Following my diagnosis, I’ve had to wait a few months to engage with therapy services. My n the meantime, reading this book has supported my understanding of PTSD, how it affects me (both physically and mentally), and educated me about approaches to therapy. Knowing how the different therapy approaches work and what is happening in the body/brain has prompted me to seek some other (somewhat more accessible) approaches e.g., yoga, music, meditation; while I’ve waited for access to ongoing psychology therapy.
There’s a bunch of resources and recommended reading, neatly summarised in the appendix. These are separate from the reference list and are accessible to the public (whether you’re learning about your diagnosis, supporting someone with this diagnosis, or just interested).
