Recently I responded to a FB meme about "You have been cursed with the job of the main character of the last book you read," with "Ooooh... this is a good question to read while reading Sutton Foster's Hooked! I think that means I get to be a hoofer and a belter and a crafter, which is kinda just me, but at a higher skill level." OK, a much higher skill level, but still, all things I do and love.

I must say, though, from my particular experiential lens, I think everyone has mom issues, so kudos to Sutton Foster for sharing hers in such an open way, with a therapeutically healthy dose of her mantra of "acceptance without expectations". I love when success principles show up in a book where you don't necessarily expect them; it doesn't matter where you learn the lesson so long as you actually do.

Donald and I went into Barnes & Noble with the intention of getting just ONE book, two if we just could not help ourselves. They had a display at the front of the store with books that had been signed by the author and I recognized this one by Sutton Foster. We went to Troy High together, although she was in another grade. So, of course, I had to pick it up to support a high school friend!

It was a very enjoyable book and I loved getting to know more about Sutton! I wish you all the best (and loved Bunheads!)!

"Hooked" is a well-written and well-paced book about Foster's complicated relationship with her agoraphobic mother that happens to open chapters/sections with various crafts she created over the years. I enjoyed this book-and would recommend it- if you like reading about growing up with a mentally ill parent, and appreciate a hopeful story of reconciliation with parents (definitely her father, sort of her mother) in later life. Foster is open about how therapy helped her deal with a difficult relationship- and I appreciated that model.
However: I am not sure if the subtitle of this book exactly fits the book- also, the cover is way too happy for the majority of this book. I was also not quite ready for another book about a dying mother for personal reasons, so was kind of startled by that turn. The book also deals with fertility struggles and a (thankfully) happy adoption story- so, fair warning.

Thank you to Grand Central Pub and Sutton Foster for letting me read Hooked early. This book hits shelves October 12.

If you know me, you know I am a wardrobe supervisor for broadway tours. I’ve been doing this for about 8 years now and I’ve just come back after our pandemic hiatus to the tour of Come From Away. We are in tech right now and it’s hard to explain just how amazing it is to work in this community, it is just so special.

Sutton Foster is a broadway star and also a crochet master. Just these two things together make her someone I will always root for. This book, Hooked, is her memoir, she combines deep moments of struggle in her life with the various crafts that have helped her though them. In this book she recounts family struggles, career highs and lows as well as personal triumphs. I even learned a little more about a good friend of hers who I have had the pleasure of working with! If you’re into crafting, broadway or just a fan of Sutton’s, this book is for you. She includes recipes, crochet patterns and musings of her interesting life, I highly recommend this one!

I grew up admiring Sutton’s musical theatre career with her being a personal idol of mine since I viewed her as a close to perfect as you can be as a performer. Reading this book, not only did I learn about how she coped with the pressure of being the star I saw her as (and still do) but I got to see into her soul as she shares so beautifully her experiences of her life through hobbies. I had no idea what her relationship was like with her mother and getting to hear about her life right from her took her off this pedi stool I placed her on all those years ago and showed me that we’re not all the different. I felt like she wrapped me in one of her crocheted blankets and said “you’re gonna be ok because I did it too”.
