Another perfect book by Oge Mora! There's really something about the text that is magnificent for reading with kids, and I'll admit that I didn't fully understand the ending until about the fifth readthrough (we read it incessantly for a week or so, and clearly the book yields more on each reading!). I love that the deep breath is built into the story (for the reader and the audience), and that the book demonstrates how to overcome disappointment (and that children are not the only ones who experience it!). And as always, the visuals are inventive and beautiful.

In spite of all the things that go wrong, the little girl and her mother still have a wonderful Saturday together.

A nice story, but I'm really ranking this one based on the vivid, mixed-media illustrations.

Growth mindset in action.

Ms. Mora's second book is a beautiful as the first. Ava's mom works every day of the week, except for Saturday, their special day. This Saturday starts out like any other, but disaster strikes again and again. The library cancelled storytime, the new dos are ruined, the park is too loud and her mom forgot the tickets to the puppet show. Ava, although sad, is not mad b/c they got to spend the day together and when they get home, they make their own puppets and put on a show of their own.

as a black girl who had the busiest mom growing up and looked forward to spending Saturdays and special outings with her mom, this made me a little teary in the best way :') Super insightful on how to deal with conflicts outside of your control as a mom, and a child. I loved the illustrations and even more, how the emotions translated through them.

This is by the author of "Thank You, Omu!" which is a lovely book. Saturday begins with a calendar on the end-papers. You can see just how special Saturday is for Ava and her mother. One Saturday everything goes wrong. But with each mishap, "...They paused, closed their eyes, and - whew! - let out a deep breath." They don't pretend that the mishaps are not disappointing, but they each find a way to remember that "Saturdays are wonderful..." Reading this made me think of Daniel Tiger's song, "When you feel so mad that you want to roar, just take a deep breath....and count to four." A nice book for helping kids deal with little disappointments. Beautiful illustrations.

I gasped aloud as I read this one. Have you ever had "one of those days"? A day that you've looked forward to ALL WEEK, and when it finally comes, everything goes wrong? Can you just turn that day around? I LOVED this realistic story about a mother and child who treasure their time together, no matter what!

A beautiful story about spending quality time with mom and dealing with disappointments. This would make a great mother's day story.

A mother and child look forward to their special Saturday together. The day doesn't go as planned, however Ava reassures her mother that "Today was special. Today was splendid. Saturdays are wonderful...because I spend them with you."

Rounded up because it never hurts to remind parents that time is the best thing they can give their children.
