This is Japanese fiction - simple, plotless, but pulls at your heart strings. I’m a huge cat lover so I was very excited for this one but I had trouble getting through it. I think it was the short story style, I felt like as soon as I actually started to care about the characters it was over. I think the titular story was my favourite because the character development was the strongest throughout, all the other ones I found myself forcing myself to get through.

If you like cats and would like to read some cute (possibly sad) short stories including cats, you may enjoy this. Also, you'll see bits of Nana and his predecessor Hachi (from The Travelling Cat Chronicles) in here.

Could’ve been a little faster. Loved how it all
ties into each other, especially into the first book

3.25 stars. I absolutely adored The Travelling Cat Chronicles, but the cat's perspective, which made that novel so charming, was lacking in this book. Aside from the first story, which I adored, most of these stories were simply "human relationships evolve, featuring a cat." Perhaps short stories weren't the best avenue for exploring these ideas, because some of them (the island vacation with the fantastical element) had great potential!
