Some of the exposition was repetitive. The relationship between her and Rafe was explained twice.

Pros:

This was kind of like a wacky episode of Sabrina the teenage witch.  Love potions gone wrong, Shakespeare plays and college kids.  This could be a fun read for fans of the show and suits the Valentine season quiet well.

Cons:

While I understand the witch world being new to the main character it is a little frustrating that many of her issues stem from giving in to what other people want.  While that worked out well in taking over the shop, every time she interacts with the coven leader something bad happens.  She isn’t stupid or weak so I find it baffling that she continues to cave in and endanger herself and others.

This time the main character overstepped in the investigation and trying to stop the murderer, something up to this point I had been pleased to see the author avoid.  While not as bad as some cozy mysteries it could frustrate some readers.

The book started a bit annoying with the set up for the love potion (my dudes, ladies can ask men out. What are you thinking?) but the result was pretty entertaining.

The mystery was a huge improvement over the previous book, in that our main character wasn't so clueless. The murderer wasn't so obvious, but I guessed who it was pretty early. So, that felt good.

The romance is not what I want. Bleh.
cheap ways of getting rid of Ian in favor of the mary sue vampire dude who judges people based on how they look

This book had a few editing mistakes. The first was repeating the same opening line twice in a row. Not directly after each other, but perhaps a few paragraphs apart. The second was using the wrong word somewhere.

3.5 stars. These are absolute fun candy type books. Very enjoyable and the killer is usually not who I expect which is nice for a mystery.

Every new entry in the series by Nancy Warren is just better than the previous one. In this fifth installment of cozy knitting, witchcraft and casual murder, a love potion goes wrong as all the wrong people start falling in love for each other, hilariously complicating the romantic subplots and resulting in a, well, murder — surprisingly late in the book, and yet it intertwines with the narrative perfectly, not only solving a mystery but helping untangle the love conundrum. I'm also not one for love triangles but this installment really fired up that trope by the end where it is genuinely unclear to me as to how Lucy, the main character, should feel and decide on her feelings, (which is a great tell of a triangle done right and unforced, feels like a natural and human dilemma).

I liked it, but I didn't love this novel. I've always really enjoyed the knitting shop setting and it hardly featured in this novel. This story mostly takes place around the putting on of a college play. I enjoyed that but felt that something was missing.

Not sure I'll bother with the next novel in this series for a while.
