This duology is one of the greatest queer fiction books ever written. I was awestruck when I finished!

She who Became the Sun is a beautiful historical epic. It follows the journey of a girl determined to survive poverty and famine. Her decisions lead her into a world controlled by power hungry men, and she realizes what it will mean to claim a fate not her own. If she is to be anything more than what her father saw, a girl fated for nothingness, she will have to believe and become someone else.

I give this book 5/5 for an amazing cast of characters, tense scenes, powerful females, masters of manipulation, and characters who portray deep layers of emotion.

DNF 50% into the book. I like the historical elements and the characters are interesting and writing is okay. But the story stretches on too long for me and I would like to see more action then planning and talking and political intrigue. Theres also so many characters to follow along to I get confused as to who’s pov it switches to sometimes.

I will finish the book and revisit it at a later date.

I wanted to love this but after Part I, my interest dwindled. Everything about this is compelling from the time period to the characters to the romance but it didn’t work together overall.

For me, the most fascinating parts of this book was Zhu’s time at the monastery and Ouyang’s identity struggles. I didn’t find the wlw romance compelling. In fact, I’d say Ouyang’s contrasting feelings towards his potential love interest was more interesting as there was more complexity there. However, the character arcs for the two of them were well done. I like how Ouyang’s entire personality was “might as well.”

Ultimately, I was bored for a lot of it. I expected more fantasy than we got. Not sure if I’ll check out the sequel.
