2022 reread: Listening to this with my children was such an enjoyable experience. Everything I loved about it when I read it on my own was even better with them. They are 7, 5, and 3 and they were hooked from the beginning.

2018 read: I loved everything about this book! The writing style is beautiful, the characters kept me reading, and I loved the country feel throughout. There was a strong sense of family and faith in God woven throughout everything Billy (the little boy) does; one of my favorite parts of the book was how strong his faith in God was, but how he would ask God for help and then do everything he could to make sure it happened, but also was able to recognize when God helped him. I thought the author did a beautiful job with that. I also loved the story of friendship between the two dogs and between the dogs and Billy. It is a touching, tragic (I definitely was crying by the end) novel.

I reread this childhood classic for my #RereadYourChildhood challenge. I just finished the audiobook and sat in my car weeping. I am unwell. It is beautiful and wonderful but oh so heartbreaking.

35+ years after I originally read this with my mom and sister, Where the Red Fern Grows is just as emotional as ever. Probably one of the first coming of age books I can remember, I had forgotten the details, but one thing I have always remembered are the courageous, loyal, noble, and brave Old Dan and Little Ann. The best dogs a boy could ever have.

I learned more about coon hunting than I thought possible, and enjoyed the adventures that Billy and his dogs went on. Had completely forgotten about much of the story. But I cherished it during this reread.

This book has stood the test of time and remains a beloved classic. I'm so glad I reread it.

Read this one to my boys, ages 8 and 7. I remembered reading it in 3rd grade and I remembered all the girls running sobbing to the bathroom at the end. It's definitely heart-wrenching. My kids reported liking it.

When asked what my favorite book I’d ever read was, for the longest time, this was it. I’ve read this book many times in my lifetime, and I can tell you that it holds “one of my all-time favorites” status. It’s easy to consume, and a really lovely story, despite the sad ending. It is a great read-aloud as all the chapters are about the same length. Perfect for a chapter a night.

Highly recommended!

“In his fighting heart, there was no fear.”

That ending definitely made me cry. The writing in this book was pretty good especially given that it's targeted towards children. I wasn't as invested in this book until the end because I couldn't relate to most of it especially all the coon hunting that was described in detail. I haven't owned a pet at any point so that was a bit hard to relate as well although the pure love between Billy and his hounds, the way it was described in the book was so pure and heartwarming. Every time I was left on the edge of my seat wondering if this would be the point where things would go downhill for them and felt such relief each time it wasn't. I did know beforehand that the book would have a sad ending but it still brought tears to my eyes. It's a golden book that can be read by any age.

“With a heavy heart, I turned and walked away. I knew that as long as I lived I'd never forget the two little graves and the sacred red fern.”
