3.5 stars. Face-paced horror genre craziness. I liked it, it didn't blow my socks off (mostly because it didn't have any kind of crazy plot twist).

First of all, I think this book is mis-categorized as horror. In my opinion, it's not a horror novel. It's a suspense thriller novel. A lot of people say this book deeply scared them, but I didn't find this book scary at all. It relies on a lot of blood and gore to scare you, but that sort of stuff isn't scary to me. It's more like a cop out for true horror. So that's why I think it's just a thriller with lots of gore. However, that's not to say I didn't enjoy this novel. I did. I think it's a finely written work, and I felt very invested in the characters. They all seemed really real to me, and I cared about what happened to them. The only character I felt fell a bit flat was Josh. And the story was very interesting. I haven't read anything quite like it before. All in all this is a great read, but if you're expecting something truly terrifying, not just gross, you might want to try something else.

This book was a lot on the gorey side but I still enjoyed the story. If you can stomach some detailed description of bodily harm, then this book is for you. If you have a weak stomach, don't do it to yourself.

WOW. This book scared the bejesus out of me. It starts right in--no character development, no explanations, no idyllic descriptions of the contryside, just bam!--and from there it just never stops. It centers on a small town in Wisconsin, with the rather ironic name of Safe Haven. There is one road into the town and one road out--great if you like your privacy, horrible if you're stuck in the middle of a nightmare. And this is a doozy of a nightmare. I don't want to give away any of the plot points, because figuring it out is half the fun. The other half, of course, is trying not to let your mouth drop open in absolute horror while you're figuring it out. This is some grisly stuff, but Kilborn shows remarkable restraint in his descriptions, making your imagination fill in the blanks. It's almost worse than having it all spelled out for you. Afraid is the like the best scary movie--it's what you don't know that kills you. Kilborn has definitely made my "when's his next book out" list!

This book keeps you biting your nails and on the edge of your seat from the very first page! It doesn't stop, it doesn't give you a chance to breathe. From beginning to end there is action. There are a few surprises thrown in too. Kind of twisted, and not for the weak of stomach.

This book just did not grab me. Maybe it was my mood, but the onslaught of action sequences wore me out. The plot felt tired to me, one step up (barely) from a slasher flick (and the characters about as well-developed). The first chapter shows a lot of promise, but the book quickly descends into mindless, senseless brutality with HEAPS of mediocre prose to prop it up.

This was the first "horror" type book that I have read and I absolutely loved it! It constantly keeps you on the edge of your seat!
