Burning For Revenge by John Marsden

Burning For Revenge felt like the most action packed instalment in the Tomorrow series yet. It was a breeze to get through and the plot rarely felt like it was stagnating which has been a problem in some of the previous novels. After the losses the group experienced in the Tomorrow 4, the victories were much needed. I thought Marsden balanced the heroism of the characters with Kevin's emotional state. It felt realistic and it was nice to see not everyone adapting as well to the crazy events unfolding around them. While a degree of suspension of disbelief is required, and the series is relatively formulaic, I'm still along for the ride.

Same thing, different book. Kind of. It was still fine, but the realism has more or less gone out of the window. With that being said, it was also a lot more action-packed, so much peril and constant nail-biting moments.

f the ending, though.

It was a lot less eventful than the other books in the series, well bar one major event, but I struggled to get truly into it.

The main action set piece is the biggest yet and it's exciting! The close calls keep coming but they're handled pretty well, again relying on shortcomings of amateur soldiers over and over. You can forgive.
There's also plenty of teen girl fretting; coming page after page by the end of this installment. Play to your audience, I guess.
The introduction of outlaw orphaned street urchins is hard to swallow.

Ellie, Lee, Homer, Kevin and Fi feel abandonned. Once again, they are stranded in Hell. Colonel Finley says that he cannot spare a helicopter to pick them up and they have no idea what happened to the dozen kiwi troups that they came back to Australia with. After their failed attempt to sabotage the airfield, the group is at a loss, and each member is taking it in a different way. But they feel that they can't just stay in Hell forever. They decide to go on a trip away from Wirrawee with the hopes of finding some of their family members. They have a general idea of where their families are, and it gives them a sense of purpose. But things are never simple for this group, and they soon find themselves with a golden opportunity to do some damage. The stakes are higher than they have ever been. Survival is the ultimate question. But as Ellie soon comes to realize, it is no longer just a physical battle. The mental and emotional issues that come along with the war are just as hard to combat as the enemy soldiers.
This book has a good mixture of crazy, fast paced action and reflection. It puts the group in unfamiliar territory and shows the tremendous toll that wartime can take on people.

Wow. I get so into this series that in this book I was surprised to find myself on the last page with no epilogue like usual before then flipping back and finding out i'd read on not realising i'd gotten up to the epilogue!

It was intense. I often find myself skipping forward desperate as i am to know what happens next but then force patience as i go back and read slowly to enjoy and make it last.

Unlike the last this book had action - successful action - though i loved the twist of how they entered the danger zone by accident!

I keep remembering things from my previous read and assuming they will happen in each new book in the series but am surprised again and again. I'd completely forgotten about
the girl Lee kissed and then betrayed him.
It was a shocker!

Kevin omg. That would be me. Even though i'd wish to be Ellie. Or Fi as the expectations and pressure upon Ellie would kill me long before the enemy or the war would.

One thing i especially loved about this book - such a small touch but it makes all the difference - is how much Robyn is mentioned. No. Not just mentioned but represented as if she is still there. It shows that these war may have changed almost everything - even taking away the right to grieve - but Ellie cannot let go to her friend an honours her memory by remembering and trying to do good by her.

Overall another fantastic book in The Tomorrow Series
