This is one of my favorite parenting books. Ever. And it’s only about 2 hours on audio. Brene’s work on shame and vulnerability has been so valuable for me, and applying it to parenting is some of the most realistic and helpful “advice” I’ve read. I plan to immediately relisten because there’s so much to think about and incorporate into my parenting.

"Who we are is a much more accurate predictor of how our kids will do than what we know or understand." - Brené Brown

Brené's work is gold, as always.

I’m not sure if this counts as a book so much as a lecture, but oh my goodness is this powerful stuff!! I will listen to this again and again and take notes and use this information to the best of my abilities! It spoke to me so deeply and echoed the desires I have as a parent. Highly highly recommend!!

This book is for anyone with a body and with friends. We are constantly parenting ourselves and those around, because none of us had perfect parents and we all need to learn new ways in relating to ourselves and others.

She says we teach children about boundaries by how we set and hold the, the same is true with those around us. We teach others about our boundaries by how we set and hold them, and people follow suit.

So if, like me, you are trying to now raise yourself in this complex and challenging world, I hope you read this book.

I have been on a real Brene Brown kick lately and The Gifts of Imperfect Parenting was a wonderful quick listen. Brene talks a lot in her books about belonging versus fitting in and one of the best points she makes in this book is that home should be the place where our family feels like they belong the most. We can be silly and vulnerable and not worry what others will think in our homes because it should be filled with love and acceptance.

She also makes it very clear that we can't expect behaviors from our children that we aren't performing ourselves, specifically self-acceptance and the ability to overcome our own shame. When we show ourselves love and compassion, it translates to our children.

This book was a great addition to her body of work.

This had so many important thoughts, that while I listened to it I had to stop repeatedly and type out quotes to go back to and meditate on later. Well worth the two hour listen.

Sure, I don’t have kids, but I’m running out of BB audiobooks and really felt like I needed her insights on shame and courage today. She’s told these stories before, but I always find value in their message.
