Wonderful characters and writing. The story is not as gripping as the first in the series, but is still worth the read.

I can't believe how much I enjoy this series. Nice to catch up with Gus and Call in their younger years.

Great story.

A rollicking adventure story with three dimensional characters and flawless writing - I'd been looking for this kind of book for years.

This felt like a big departure from Lonesome Dove, but I think the more violent scenes and wilder plot mirrors the more violent and wilder days of the early West, when Gus and Call are younger men.
Still present though were McMurtry’s plainly beautiful prose, phenomenal character work, and thrilling sense of adventure.
I wasn’t as emotionally moved as I was by Lonesome Dove, but I had a great time with it. Looking forward to reading the rest.

Still really enjoying this series and getting to know the characters better from the beginning of their friendship.

Few writers evoke such feelings and clarity, a true storyteller, a simple yet artful wordsmith, I'm in love with Larry McMurtry.

Better than Comanche Moon, loved getting more lore... really brutal at times
