I am not a mum, nor do I plan to be, but I am a female human in her 30s, who is still familiar with a lot of the pressures that women in general face. I got this book for a very low price in and Audible sale, and I would highly recommend the audio version. It's just one of those books that's fun to listen to and have on in the background, making mundane tasks around the house much more amusing. There are a lot of properly laugh out loud moments, but I will say that the book is longer than it really needs to be and gets a bit tedious after a while because it really only has 1 gimmick: mum is a typical white, middle class woman who aspires to live a Pinterest-worthy life, be the perfect middle class ideal of a parent, and have a marriage that's the envy of all her friends...she doesn't achieve any of this (who does?) and is instead basically just a normal human who deals with her normal human failings in a self deprecating manner. Most women in this demographic will certainly relate to this, so if this describes you, you'd probably like this book.

Okay for light reading however the main character allows herself to be a doormat. I think I have outgrown these books where the main character is a victim of her own circumstance. At 40, you should be able to stand up for yourself and not let everyone walk all over you. Its a light, frivolous read with bland characters. I won't be reading the sequel.

A very funny, keenly observed book that made me very happy that I do not have children. However, even without being a parent I could appreciate a lot of the humour, the very middle class British setting and the general tomfoolery of it all. It made me laugh out loud a few times, which for me is pretty rare when reading!
I will say that it is very over the top and entirely unlikely in lots of ways, but I set these criticisms aside mostly because it was fun and, frankly, isn't that the point?
The ending was slightly disappointing, however, though with three other books in the series I'm sure there's lots more fun to be had if I choose to continue the series. I'm not sure if I will (this is not the usual sort of book I read so have to be in the right mood for pure comedy stuff like this) but I'm glad i read this one for sure. Would definitely recommend to any mothers who need a giggle.

Het boek is geschreven in de vorm van een soort dagboek. Ellen, de hoofdpersoon, zou graag meer als hét modelgezin gezien willen worden, met haar man en 2 kinderen die ze ook in dit stramien probeert te krijgen. Hiervoor neemt ze zich voor een leukere, betere moeder te zijn. Maar, je ziet het aankomen: dit mislukt faliekant. Ze voldoet niet aan haar eigen eisen en is eigenlijk onzeker in wat ze doet als (werkende) moeder en vrouw, maar verbloemt dit door een cynisch grappige toon aan te slaan. Ze heeft een haat/liefde verhouding met het moederschap, drinkt daarbij om te overleven onder al haar eisen en onzekerheden, en vergelijkt zichzelf met anderen, vooral de Heksenkring van Verdomd Volmaakte Moeders.
Veel situaties zijn eigenlijk herkenbaar als moeder, zeker de onzekerheden en twijfels die ter sprake komen.
Gaandeweg in het verhaal heeft Ellen een geweldig idee waarmee ze aardig wat geld binnenhaalt, wat haar en haar gezin wat meer stabiliteit geeft. Soms roepen escapades een vergelijking op met Shopaholic van Sophie Kinsella, erg grappig ook.
Uiteindelijk leert Ellen ook dat niets is wat het lijkt, ze leert in te zien dat we allemaal mensen zijn met eigen onzekerheden en twijfels, en dat de Heksenkring ook maar wat doet.
Gelukkig heeft ze wel vrienden waar ze regelmatig mee op pad kan en die elkaar steunen in de tropenjaren van het ouderschap.
Haar huwelijk is in principe prima, en gaandeweg het verhaal wordt ook die relatie iets verdiept.
De satire druipt regelmatig van het verhaal af, wat regelmatig zorgt voor schaterlach-momenten. Maar ook komt er veel zelfspot van Ellen zelf, met een paar vleugjes Sarcasme en Ironie.
Maar door deze humor moet je door veel dingen heen prikken om bij de kern te komen.
Het verhaal gaat ook niet echt de diepte in, blijft vrij oppervlakkig en aan het cynisme in het boek ga je je soms wat irriteren. Soms wil je zeggen: kom tot de kern, wees eens kwetsbaar! Er gebeurt ook weinig spannends in het boek, wat de vaart er nogal uit haalt en het wat langdradig maakt.

I really enjoyed this book. It is very relatable with the real issues mum's face today and the perils of the school gates. It made me laugh and smile in places too. Here is to not perfect children.
