I’ve read this book three times now, but this is the first time I really engaged with it. I’ve always liked it but only now am really understanding it. Here we have Vonnegut sharing his lived war experience through the unmoored character of Billy Pilgrim. Through this character, we grapple with the effects of war on the psyche and what we know today as PTSD. We see how our inability to look at death leads to callous fatalism. Sadly, this continues on and on into our present day, whether it be our inability to not wage war or our inability to confront everyday violence in our nation. So it goes.

I also appreciate that the story is told as an alien novel might be composed- snapshots of moments that don’t have to have meaning or have a linear direction that when viewed altogether forms a cohesive picture of the story. At first, the form is disconcerting, but when you realize what he’s doing, it’s like a flash of brilliance. I’m sure I will continue to revisit this work over and over again. Love me some Vonnegut and this one is truly special.

you can just tell when reading this that it’s a classic for a reason.

I fear that I am neither media literate enough to fully appreciate this book, nor technically literate enough to write a review that fully gives the book the recognition it deserves. So it goes.

I think it’s incredibly interesting that the book is tagged as funny, as that was not how I felt reading it. There are parts that are absurd, or silly, but I’m not sure funny is the word I would use. Sad and harrowing come to mind when I have to describe this book, and how surprisingly grounded it felt despite some of the more nonsensical things happening.

I like the idea of all time happening at once, with death not being something to mourn. I think having experienced horrors at war, I would react in a similar way.
