I read this because it was suggested for fans of Yellowjackets… girl. This book could have been an excellent commentary on patriarchal societies and all of the ways that they harm women. Instead. A sixteen year old girl gets pregnant in a treehouse by some boy who is (no doubt) at least 18 and whose entire job is to murder Grace Year girls. Said sixteen year old girl has huge plans to expose what the Grace Year really is upon her return to the county and instead she walks right into the oppressive role that she was always meant to play— that she went the entire book resenting and criticizing. She stays silent and accepts her role as wife and baby maker and does nothing to stand up for the little girl (7 years old!) who her new hubby sent to work as a prostitute in the outskirts… right. Also completely unrealistic that almost all of the county women are undercover feminist freedom fighters when the audience has only ever seen them contributing to the harming of the young women and girls in the county. Don’t even get me started on the reveal of the mother being the usurper. I had high hopes and almost all of them were let down. A classic wannabe feminist story where a privileged woman (newfound wife of the head of the council) conforms to oppression in the end because, hey, maybe she can make a good life for herself despite it… BOO! Not like Yellowjackets at all!

⚡️ mini review
It’s only taken me a month to get to this review but here we go 🙃 this book gave a bit of Handmaids tale meets Lord of the flies
On their 16th year, the girls in Garner County are banished to the woods for one year so that they can release their magic into the wild, returning purified and ready for marriage.
I was entertained from the beginning of this audiobook and could not get enough. Trying to listen any chance I could get. Kirsten was wild, feral and beyond crazy and she brought out so much anger in me.. I so desperately wanted Tierney to put her in her place!
If you haven’t already I highly recommend checking this out! The story feels so surreal, there’s magic, mayhem and murder. Crazy men in the woods and even love 😉 but I can’t promise happy endings
