3.5-4 stars. i enjoyed the humour and writing style. certain aspects of gilda i found very relatable - i enjoyed how well written she was.

The author is excellent at representing a character with anxiety and depression.

That said, the rest is.... annoying. 🥲 God, this was difficult to read. It felt like the book was confused about what it wanted to be. Plus WHO SAID THIS WAS DARKLY FUNNY???? It was dark, yes. And maybe a few paragraphs were funny. But that does not make a book darkly funny 💀 I expected more dark and dry humour while we talked about morbid things but there was barely a trace of that. Ugh.... It wasn't awful, it was just disappointing.
emotional funny medium-paced
Plot or Character Driven: Character

There are certain books that linger in your mind long after you finish them — and for me, this was one of them.

It immerses you in the mind of Gilda, a young woman cursed with the misfortune of feeling everything too much, trapped in a world that doesn’t understand her, or perhaps one she doesn’t understand at all.

"I feel like my ribs are a birdcage and my heart is a bird on fire."

Every constant misunderstanding in this story feels real. Her reactions, her choices, her way of thinking. She shares many of the same thoughts I often have: How can people murder other people? How can someone take a life and feel no remorse? How is it that we go through all these things on Earth, only to end up as one tiny cell in an universe of eight billion — is that meant to bring me comfort or despair? And why does the certainty that everyone will die one day fill me with so much fear?

"My death, and the death of everyone I love, is inevitable."

It’s a book of relentless self-awareness. One that makes you pity the main character while, somehow, making you pity yourself at the same time.

Best read of the year so far.
