this is a rather sad story; but very interesting. a fairly quick read, too, even though it took me forever to finish it, haha.

This is a heartbreaking, but important story for all to be aware. It is written from a personal experience but understandable for middle school children.

With all the recent attention that human trafficking and slavery have gotten I wanted to read an account of a survivor. This book was exactly what I was looking for. Not all slaves wear chains, some are walking around chained by fear.

Sin palabras, es una montaƱa rusa de emociones. Te hace pensar cuan afortunados somos al tener lo que tenemos y empezar apreciarlo.

I really liked this book. I did my research paper over human trafficking my freshman year of high school, so I always will continue to pick up novels about the topic. She has an amazing story, and she is such an inspiration to society; I hope she continues to work towards her dreams and achieve them above and beyond. If you don't normally like non-fiction, don't pass this one by just because it says "True Story." Seriously, pick it up and read it. I think you will love it.

Overall this was an interesting memoir. I had some minor issues with it and some of that I imagine comes from that it is a YA text and I didn't know that going in. I imagine some of my other issues come from English being the author's second language. Other than some stilted language choices and preachy moments which I admit would be good for my high school students.

The memoir itself is a good story. The author was sold into slavery in Egypt when she was a young girl and she has had quite a journey to freedom in the US. It is a sad tale with an eventual happy ending but it does take a long time to find that happy ending.

It's really hard to say, but I hated this book. To me, it really wasn't well written. Yes, it's sad, and I know she doesn't speak English, but to me, instead of an actually book telling a horrifying tale of being a slave, it felt like some stream of conscious writing that left a lot of gaps and there were several tangents that she went on that made no point to the story. With that, I would say it was a poorly edited book. There were also several times where I felt like the book could of ended and it didn't, it just want on and the whole part of her captivity felt like it wasn't that big in the book. Like, it took a while to get to that point and it didn't take up that much of the book either. Wasn't impressed at all. Frankly wanted to bash my head in.

I recommend that everyone read this book.
Granted it was not the greatest piece of literature I have read, but it really opened my eyes to a topic that I did not really know much about. Everyone has heard of slavery before, but I think most people don't know that it is still going on to this day. This book really makes you aware of the awful act of enslaving someone and it also really brings awareness to the situation.
This book also makes you appreciate what you have and to never take anything for granted. Shyima Hall is by far the strongest person I have ever read about and I believe people should be more aware of the challenges and struggles she encountered in her life. This book is truly inspirational and you will not regret picking it up.

This was such a emotional story to read, hearing about how poorly Shyima was treated broke my heart. IF YOU SEE SOMETHING, SAY SOMETHING. The worst thing that will happen if you're wrong is it will slightly inconvenience someone.
