READ THIS! I loved this collection of short stories. Her concise writing style reminds me of Alice Munros - where a sentence tells you as much as a paragraph does for others. Her words are raw and powerful that remind me of Toni Morrison or Alice Walker. This is one collection I read every story, even if I was not enthralled by it. (This is very thin collection so great for your commute).

Kathleen Collins was certainly a gifted writer and I’m glad I read this collection of her short stories. Like anytime that I read a short story collection, I found myself liking some more than others. I would certainly recommend this book to anyone who is a short story fan or realistic fiction fan.

A poignant, vivid, funny, and elegant little collection of stories. These little glimpses sometimes feel like memoirs and sometimes like slices of life. They explore gender and race dynamics, colorism, family structures, classism, and romance.

It was great as an audiobook with multiple readers/voice actors, especially since the author was a filmmaker.

Kathleen Collins obviously had enormous potential as a writer. Her stories felt fresh and contemporary, even though they were written more than 50 years ago. Unfortunately, for the most part I did not enjoy this collection, but a few standouts ("How Does One Say," "When Love Withers All of Life Cries," and, especially, "Dead Memories...Dead Dreams") made it worthwhile.

Its sad knowing that some of these stories could very well still be happening to this day. So much progress has been made. Its not illegal to love. Or at least it shouldnt be. The order of the stories dont really matter and the writing kinda shows some cultural surroundings. Some are clear. Others confusing. Some are happy. Others tragic. But love is never just one kind of way is it?
