It wasn't bad it just wasn't remarkable. One of the things that annoyed me is how the rules of society and property at that time just dont seem to apply here at all. Also am i the only one who found it weird that her friend's husband cared way to much about heroine's virtue? Like to the point where he would get violent and make death threats umm...what? Honestly if i haven't read the previous book i might have suspected he might be a love interest. I dont know it just didnt feel very historically authentic

Hach, was nett!

i loved this book. i loved it even more than the first one. i feel like i’m incapable of any intelligent thoughts about it because i loved it that much.

just like the duchess deal, it was so much fun and i found myself smiling and laughing the whole way through. however, i feel like the governess game leans more into serious topics, more so than the previous book. there are discussions of abandonment, death, panic attacks and disorders, real grief and trauma, and how those affect how you build a family.

i thought the premise was great and the set up of alex and chase in the previous book made me curious to pick this one up. their chance encounter in a bookstore and then the subsequent meeting where they believe the other doesn’t remember them was brilliant. chase hiring alex to be the governess to his wards just because alex was in the right place at the right time… just great.

speaking of the wards… rosamund and daisy added a lot of the humor and heart to the book. they were what moved a lot of the plot and inspired most of the antics that pushed alex and chase together. millicent also gets the award for best supporting character.

alex has quickly become one of my favorite romance heroines. she is smart, witty, beautiful, and unafraid to stand up for herself and what she wants.

chase was a classic rake and i loved it. i loved him and his big heart.

i would kill for a novella about them and what happens after the events of the book. i could have read 50 more pages and been just as happy. give me more chase and alex!!

“As deaths go, it would have been a kind one. There were worse ways to meet one’s demise than being buried alive in literature.”

“To me, the truth doesn’t ruin anything. Why should understanding the universe diminish our sense of wonder at it?”

“Here were three people who desperately needed each other—perhaps even loved each other—and they would all rather contract consumption than admit it.”

Disappointing after the last one

I delved into this with such excitement and high hopes after reading the previous book in the series. But I became increasingly disappointed and almost didn't finish reading it. Rather than the clever dialogue and compelling characters, it was a farcical (not the engaging kind) excursion into improbability and drawn out sex scenes. The author also made me almost dislike the characters that I'd come to love in the previous book. I am not sure I will read the next book in the series.

Chase and Alex are an interesting couple and the two little girls are cute. I enjoyed reading how Alex connected with the girls as their governess and do her best to show them they are cared for. Alex was also able to get under Chase's skin and help him heal and learn that love is not meant to be feared but cherished.
