I should never have picked up this book with the praise from Lin Manuel Miranda on the over.

The voice of the author (writing style, not the actual narration) just doesn't sit well with me. It feels like a backdoor brag as an entire book.

I don't typically read non-fiction but I've been a fan of Watsky's for a while and decided to check it out.
This novel is just a collection of essays, so it isn't an autobiography so much as it's snippets of Watsky's life. He is, first and foremost, a poet which is very obvious when you read his beautiful descriptions, head-scratching life questions and genius metaphors.
A great book for a light read.

I had to give this four stars because I really thought his writing was clever. He writes, in fact, in a way I feel I was taught as a grad student in a writing program. His writing reads to me like he has studied and worked hard at creatively presenting his ideas, if that makes sense? However, I didn’t find all the stories interesting - but I was turning the page for his writing.

Watsky is such a unique individual that seeing the world through his eyes is a genuinely really different experience than reading most 'life-collection essays'. It's funny, it's sad, but most of the credit here is that the book is unique.

I wish I could be unbiased with this review but I can't. George Watsky's music has made an impact in my life since I first saw him perform in Omaha a year or so ago. When I saw that he was writing a collection of short essays I had little doubt that it wasn't going to be fantastic.

My favorite aspect of How to Ruin Everything is how makes stories that might not initially be relatable to everyone become a story they can make personal ties to. I won't give away any details to the short stories but each one of them shows how talented this young man is. They combine a lot different emotions and I was constantly nodding my head along with the words here as I do his music.
