I love a good Cat Sebastian romp. It's always a little fanfictiony but in a fun way.
Charming queer romance between a retired highwayman and the son of the Duke who destroyed his life. Fun characters, neat plotting, and issues of social hierarchy and power abuse neither ignored nor distracting from the romance.

Cute characters. Love the fencing and the cozy criminal underworld angle.
I wish we had more time in character's heads. Characters make some life changing decisions that are supposed to demonstrate growth, but I don't feel like I understand how they got from point A to point B.
Also, it's crazy to me that Percy doesn't reply to Kit's speech about his distaste of gentry. I feel like that being a conversation instead of a monologue could have made Percy's later decisions more believable.
This book was nice, but I like some of Sebastian's work more.

3.5, stars rounded up. I wanted to like this more, but I think it was more of a me issue than a book issue. I did have some issues with the pacing, and some plot points feeling underdeveloped. Rounded up to 4 stars because I thought it was really interesting and enjoyed seeing an aristocratic character realize that the aristocracy was bad and struggling with their place in it.

This is probably one of the best romances I've read recetly - it's queer and has an amazing core relationship, an exciting plot and a vibrant cast of side-characters. Kit and Percy work so well together and the story never seems dull, even in the quiet scenes. I could tell the reveal pretty early on but I don't think it was meant to be challenging, and it still worked well for me.
Aside from it being a great romance, I love how the book makes a point to criticise the gentry as an instituation and never romanticises noblility and welth. Recognising the atrocities inherent to this sistem is a crucial aspect of Percy's develoment, and is a non-negatiable for Kit and Percy's relationship.
CWs: bigamy, explicit sex scenes, references to past deaths (spouse, child), death of a parent, violence (guns, swords, hand fights, blood), homophobia
