Genders

Bella Forrest takes you into the book to where you dont want to come up for air until you have devoured the book in one sitting.

I honestly only liked one character in this entire book. The main character had no confidant throughout the whole book. Yet she didn't attempt to befriend the lonely dog? That's crazy to me when your all alone you can at least find solisce in a pup. The beginning grabbed my attention immediately but after 1/3 of the way through I could barely get through it. I had high hopes for this book but unlikable characters and the majority is about cage fighting and her obsession with fighting. I want to know what's in the egg but can not put myself through attempting the second book. I honestly wanted to rate this one star but I liked the concept and enjoyed Viggo even if his name is lackluster.

The story has an interesting concept where the world is divided between the two sexes. Women rule one side and men rule the other side. Through a series of events, Violet (MC) finds herself on the wrong side of the law and with a death sentence. She is given a choice to work on a mission for Matrus (the women's side) in Patrus (men's side). The mission results in her having to do things that go against her morals. The love interest was compelling and I wish there could have been more of him in the story but then it wouldn't have worked. Violet starts off as a very feisty young woman and still is by the end but my only gripe was that it didn't feel like she achieved anything in the story. At the end, she is actually worse off than when she started (except she's not about to be executed). The end was left open for the next in the series.

I have only read one of Bella Frost's books in the past, but the blurb to THE GENDER GAMES was interesting enough for me to agree to read and review it.

I enjoyed Violet for the most part. Trouble seemed to find her a lot and at some points she seemed to get into trouble just to get into trouble. For someone whom is on a secret mission and needs to be covert, she lacked the ability to think about the rules in her new city quite a bit. Other than that I liked her just fine.

I really enjoyed the storyline, but the pace was way too slow in a lot of THE GENDER GAMES and the storyline had some filler things that I felt could have been left out or shortened. I really wanted action, but got slow and hesitant instead for most of the book. This of course ruined some of the flow for me.

The romance was lacking. There is some minor interest between Violet and her husband Lee. Their marriage was a business arrangement so I didn't really expect anything to come of it besides that and after the blow up at the end of THE GENDER GAME, I am glad they weren't romantically involved. I REALLY wanted more from Violet and Viggo. There is some major attraction and interest from the two, but besides one kiss, they held back. There is always book two.

There was some major bombs at the end of THE GENDER GAME and we were then left hanging. I have a lot of questions and want to see some things happen, so THE GENDER SECRET is on my radar.

I dared complete this book

After reading this phrase maybe thirty times I was starting to become fed up but thanks to my compulsion, I just had to finish it. The plot for this story was incoherent- violent girl just happens to be the person called upon by the queen to perform this top mission?? I assume the book was supposed to be some clever way of addressing gender differences or stereotypes but it came across as clumsy at best. More often the gender references were cringe inducing. The very names patrus and matrus say enough. Completely unimaginative, as was the romantic subplot, which mostly seemed childish. Astonishing that this book received so many five star ratings.

Just read the first book in The Gender Game series by Bella Forrest. If you were a fan of the Hunger Games series or the Divergent series, you might enjoy this series. Just basing that off of the first book though. It has that futuristic regression of our society and addresses/questions social constructs.
