The concept was interesting, but the story was a bit slow at times and then other times it felt like the author was trying to make it action packed, but just went a bit over board.
This book has gotten me back into reading. I have missed it so much but my life has been so hetic that I just haven't made time for it but as I grew to love this book I made sure I kept time to read it. Granted, it did take a couple weeks to really get into it and to enjoy it but once i got past the "explanation" phase I really started to love it.
I do love the similarities to The Hunger Games. After all this is why I decided to buy the book and try it. Even though it is similar it's not the same book at all. The characters are different, the style is different, the philosophies and ideas are also different. I liked The Hunger Games because it made me think and empathise with the characters, and so did this book. I love it when a book can make me feel and think without me being conscious of this fact. I will admit that I did get tired after reading it as I was reading it so in depth as I was so wholly invested into the story. This also made me feel like I was actually living it which is actually a bit freaky now I think about it?
I have no idea what I'm going to read next but I know it won't be half as good as this book. I will definitely be buying the next books in the series and possibly some of Thorne's other books too.
The only downside I have with this book is that it is on the larger and heavier side so it was more difficult to carry around (but I still managed) and also it takes up more space on my bookshelf.

I really wanted to like this book since the plot sounded very interesting and the concept has so much potential... but. I understand that in a dystopian world you can't expect everything to be realistic but it annoyed me how:
*spoilers ahead*
1. the issues that would definitely arise in a world where men and women are separated are not addressed -- (ex: girls growing up to not know how to really interact with men because they live in a society dominated by women, however the main character can easily adapt to moving to the other side of the river, and even spark romantic feelings / kiss passionately just isn't realistic);
2. Violet is just not a likeable or relatable character in my opinion, she's violent and irrational and I did not feel a connection from the start, although it did get better later, the character just felt lackluster;
3. the ending felt like it was thrown in just for the sake of giving a cliffhanger, there was no prior context or even mention of the toxic forest....
At the rate the book was going I had trouble staying focused enough to read till the end, and I am sad to say that I will not be reading the rest of the series...

Meh, not a lot going on here and to get on a motorcycle for the first time and ride in the rain? Lol. It was a fun distraction, anyways
Booooo cliffhanger. This book has an intriguing story so I want to know what happens next, but it wasn’t well written enough that I want to read the next SEVEN (👎🏼👎🏼) books to get to the answer.
I think this book will stay with me for a long time. Violet Bates is a wonderful character whose journey had me guessing the whole time. For a book I thought would be stereotypical... it was nothing like that.
Love Viggo !

3.50/3.75 stars
This book was whatever. The bonding between Viggo and Violet did make the book somewhat enjoyable. I also like that Violet can fight. I'm not her biggest fan, but the fact that she can protect herself makes her okay to me.
I think book 2 could be better now that it'll be dual POVs. I'm interested in being inside Viggo's head.
