Orphan Maria Merryweather leaves her home in London after her father's death. She, her governess, and her dog travel to live with Maria's uncle. As part of her new life she is introduced to her family crest, the lion and the unicorn. She soon discovers a family mystery. The more she learns about her family's past, the greater her desire becomes to right the wrongs her family committed. The answer to the family mystery lies in the family motto "The brave soul and the pure spirit shall with a merry and loving heart inherit the kingdom together."
The Little White Horse is an amazing classic with lots of symbolism and deep themes including forgiveness, repentance, the Atonement, inter-generational relationships, heritage, identity, fear, courage, purity, love, vanity, pride, gratitude, and humility.
You don't want to miss out on such a beautiful, meaningful book. It's one of those "forgotten classics" which need to be remembered.

Oh, how I wish I had read this book as a child! I read it with a friend, and we both agreed that as children this is the kind of book we would have finished and, immediately, turned back to the first page to read again. The language in this book is beautifully descriptive so you see the actions as clear as if you were there. Though set in 1842, because of the suggestion of magic that surrounds Maria and Robin, it could as easily be yesterday. Maria is a captivating heroine who seeks to discover the mystery of Moonacre Manor and to right that which is wrong. As readers of Elizabeth Goudge would expect, the Manor itself plays a major role in the story and is more like a character than merely a setting. I long to go live there myself.

I hadn’t heard of Goudge, so I ventured over to Wikipedia and learnt that one of the works she is most known for is called The Little White Horse, a children’s novel I would classify as a mix between historical and fantasy. Although this book won’t appeal to everyone due to its particular tone and simple plot, I found it a comforting read.
This book kept me grounded this week. I had just begun to take my apartment search to the next level by scheduling a few viewings. I had always known this would be the most stressful part of the ‘getting into grad school’ process. Starting the search made that really sink. The point being, I read The Little White Horse when my mind was all abuzz with concerns of practical adult life. Although I found it difficult at times to focus, this lovely little tale kept me grounded by being the just what I needed to put my head in the clouds.

I picked this book up in a secondhand bookshop somewhere in the UK when I was 13 and I absolutely adored it then.
I randomly was struck with the urge to reread it out of nostalgia and I have to say, while a lot of the themes of the book don't hold up as an adult, that feeling of whimsy remained.
I'm also opting not to rate it, because I don't want to take that away from 13 year old me

I enjoyed this one! Evidently it was one of J. K. Rowling’s favorite childhood books, and after reading it, I can see why.
