this was, for sure not the book i thought it was . For one thing, with a book that has a unicorn on the cover, there really was not much about horses in it and i am not mad about that . This was a whimsical book about adventure seen through a child`s eyes . Part of me is still wondering if this story was really a child`s way of hiding from a very sad and cruel "real" life . Reading through this i always thought that things were "too" good and happy and at the end of the book some dark sinister event was going to prove this was all fake.. I am a Stephan King fan after all .
Technically skimmed the last 20 or something pages, but I don't think I really missed anything of great importance.
The Little White Horse, by Elizabeth Goudge, may be a children's book, but the characterization and the plot border on ridiculous.
This is the story of Maria, a little girl who after her father's death is shipped to her closer relative who lives secluded in the magical land of Moonacre.
Here she discovers she's got a destiny to full fill to lift the curse that has hurt her family so much.
One of the things that bothered me was the way most adults behaved, and the way everyone did everything Maria ordered no questions asked, and how everyone always did the right thing, among other stuff. It just seemed unrealistic, not magical but silly.
The plot wasn't really impressive, was predictable; but the narrative was rich and careful with little details, though that just couldn't save this book for me.

The prose is so beautiful and everything about this book is magical. Usually I don't really like long descriptions and all, but there I enjoyed them (almost with stars in my eyes), every word of them was magical.
And then the characters. Each of them was special and had their own part of the story even if Maria is the main character. They all had an important role to play.
I'm going to stop there but please read this book, it is so beautiful, and only had ~300 pages.

I can't remember which year it was that I bought this book. I've been reading on this one forever,
but I've had other books that I've prioritized and finished. I recently finished A Dance With Dragons and I finally found the time to finish it. It was the movie adaption "The Secret of Moonacre" (2008) that inspired me to read it. I could not resist after finding out that the movie which I loved was based on a book. The book and the movie are very different, but they both have their ups and downs. The movie did not have the christian element, but the movie does not have beautiful descriptions of light, colour and nature that the book has. The light and playfulness of the book balances its darker corner like the fact that Maria is an orphan, and the blood feud between Merrywether and Coq de Noir. A simple way to put it, it is a very innocent tale about pride.

A dear friend, who loves Elizabeth Goudge, gave me a copy of this delightful novel. She keeps asking if I've read it yet, and I know she will have wonderful thoughts to share about the story when we discuss.
It is said that JK Rowling considers this one of her childhood favorites, and while I was reading it, I could see elements of the story that influenced her writing - and each one was a delightful discovery. More a fable or fairy tale than a story, it's just wonderful. One I will definitely re-read.
