This book had been sitting on my shelf for years, and on a whim I decided to read it on a random Tuesday.

I truly was not prepared to be reading such a beautiful prose that takes a tragedy and turns it into a beautiful myth.

It expresses pain and longing so well, and delves deep (pun intended) into the weight of great responsibility.

Highly recommend and it’s a super short read!

I truly need to thank my boyfriend for this read. If he hadn’t picked the book up for himself, there’s a chance that I never would have read it. And that would have been a travesty.

As a huge Clipping. fan, he just had to pick up the book that was inspired by one of their songs. The Deep tells a tale that I didn’t know I needed to read until I’d already read it. I’m so glad that I did – so glad that he brought this story into my life – as it truly is a near perfect story.

This story is gripping and impactful. It tells a story using a truly devastating genocide that happened in the world to create a beautiful tale. Not only does it touch on true historical events, this story brings light to a serious issue that still exists today – rampant racism. While this issue is not the main focus of the story, it carries weight within the creation of the wajinru.

Yetu’s story has impact. It has weight. It might be fictional, but the meaning in these words and the lessons you can learn from them matter.

I was lost initially, but the symbology and themes began to present themselves around 1/3 of the way through. I was most taken with the afterword, when the narrator called listeners out by saying something to the effect of listening on 2x speed and that there were likely things missed. He also said that this was a tale that had changed over the course of time and had been added to and adjusted in the different iterations. It is certainly a story to pay attention to, as the truth is in the details.

Still thinking about this one months later.

Really impactful for such a short read. Fantastical novella inspired by historical events, which makes it all more chilling. The struggle with the crushing weight of remembering one's traumatic history, the temptation to offload that on someone else (to the point of having a culture organized all around doing just that)... but how can you have a future without processing the past? And ultimately the difference between carrying that alone, being the only one who can, vs remembering as a communal effort. With real OR chosen family.

This may very well be one of the best things I’ve ever read! So beautifully written. So thought provoking. So many important themes covered. And all captured in such a short read. I am in awe. And the fact that this book was born of music, a retelling of a retelling. One of them being the song The Deep by Clipping.

This is a story about loneliness, belonging, generational trauma, letting go of the past and holding on to our history and what that does to us and our mental health! So many wonderful metaphor’s throughout and so relatable despite being a book about mer-people who live in the ocean! I also loved the historical elements of the book and how these mer-people where born from pregnant black women who where thrown over board on slave ships! What a way to honour those lives and tell the story of them living on instead of perishing as they did!

Just truly phenomenal storytelling!
