at once a sprawling and insular story. we're gazing out into the endless ocean, we're seeing our reflection a stagnant tide-pool. incredible world building and lore.

A very unique depiction of the importance of shared cultural history, grief, and trauma, and how no one can hold it all on their own.
However, I found myself getting confused easily on timelines and characters, which may have been the point but made it hard for me to follow the story all throughout

This book is unlike any that I’ve read before. I did love the originality of how the wajinru sprung to life out of horrific tragedy. The discussion of how our history and trauma is stored within us, and the importance of no one person carrying that on their own. This was a truly beautiful message.
I do pretty well with jumping timelines in storytelling l, but the way it’s executed here was a bit confusing for me at times. In the afterword, it is mentioned the “telephone” methodology to telling this story. So, I’m sure that plays into the format.
Important story to read on grief, loss, rebirth, and finding oneself in the mist of pain.

I can't lie, I feel some of this one probably went over my head because I got confused on who exactly was talking during some of the chapters. But Daveed Diggs reading to me? An extra star for the narration. I did find the concept fascinating, and overall I enjoyed the book.

Good, but not a favorite. Some bit weirded me out and the timeline was a bit wonky.
