I loved the story and learning about Sam’s life as he struggled with his acting career!
I’ve been a huge fan of Sam Hueghan since I started watching Outlander many moons ago so I was pretty excited to learn more about him through reading his memoir. And I’m so happy to not have been disappointed by it.
Sam takes us on a beautiful journey through the Scottish Highlands and now I’m desperately wanting to go for a trip. I can just envision this amazing trek he made and also I want to see the mushrooms.

Sam is such a beautiful writer. He really captures the senses when painting the backdrops of his stories.
Waypoints is a dual journey. He shares about his childhood and journey to acting woven through the tale of his six-day long hike in the Highlands. I read parts and listened to parts (because obviously, one would want to hear his delightful voice), so I do want to note that the audiobook includes recordings from the trail while he was in the moment. It adds a wonderful layer to his story as you can literally hear the Scottish rain beating down on him.

Excellent as an audiobook -- there's a top review on this book from Korrie's Korner that encapsulated my takeaways from this book perfectly. It was basically very interesting: vulnerable, encouraging and informative.
3.5 stars, rounded up to 4. The way to experience this memoir is definitely by listening to the audiobook - it is narrated by Heughan, and he does an excellent job. His charm and humor come through much clearer in his narration than the print format (although be sure to flip through the print copy, as it has some photos). It was interesting to hear about his struggles to launch a successful acting career, and having been to Scotland and being familiar with the West Highland Way (a future goal of mine!) and having hiked up Ben Nevis, the U.K.'s highest mountain and one of the final parts of the West Highland Way, I enjoyed hearing about Sam's hike. Outlander fans will appreciate the bits of information and trivia that Sam shares about the show.
Note: I also wrote this review for the Manchester Public Library (CT) Goodreads account.

Fast, unchallenging read/listen, and I mean that as a compliment. Audio is the correct medium for this, as the author narrates and includes bonus snippets of recordings he made along the way. Having read many memoirs of AT & PCT thru hikes, his 100 mile journey, sleeping in hotels and eating in restaurants, is adorable. I’m not casting aspersions, because I also enjoy an actual mattress after a day of hiking, but certainly not what I think of when I think of a hiking memoir. Worth it if you’re a fan, but skippable if not.
This was one of my favorite books this year. It went by so fast I even went back and re-listened to a couple chapters. Sam is fantastic at telling stories and I could listen to him talk all day long. I want so badly to travel the West Highland Way now and visit all the things on the route. I did NOT need another excuse to want to visit Scotland.
I really enjoyed this one ☺️☺️ having watched Sam on Outlander and his other travel show - I have always really appreciated his personality. We get to see a bit deeper and edgier side to him in this memoir!
The way the story flowed - from intertwining his career path to his insane hiking journey through the famous Scotland trail - and how it all came together - was just fantastic!
Sam's story is unique within it's own way, but I am sure very relatable for people who were young that never felt like they fit in, felt lost, and were not sure where life was taking them along the way.
Though there isn't any religious undertone - I enjoyed Sam's connection to nature and how powerful that alone can be to fill our spiritual connection
My favorite take aways:
1. 96 miles is a long way
2. Toenails are overrated
3. It’s absolutely OK to cry (but you won’t get there any quicker)
4. Talking to yourself is not a sign of madness. Quite the opposite
5. Scotland is breathtaking
6. People are kind
Also: Stay in the moment, appreciate what you have now, and give love and don't be afraid to receive it.

Listening to the audiobook recorded by Sam made him telling his story so personal and a great read/listen
