If you haven’t read this book yet, stop what you are doing and get the audiobook! I’ll wait.

The pairing of career and personal waypoints with those encountered along a long trail works beautifully in theory, but not in practice. Much like Sam himself at the beginning of his journey, the telling struggles with pacing and organization. Listening to the audio was lovely, but it emphasized the disjointed nature. That said, I would happily have read just of his time on the trail itself. Reflections on the areas and the struggles brought me back to my own limited time on the WHW and emphasized my need to get back and do the whole thing.

This was so fun! I’m not an Outlander groupie, but listening to a Scottish man talk to me on a road trip is never a bad thing.

Listen to the audiobook!!! Books read by the author are my favorite and Sam doesn’t disappoint narrating his book. I enjoyed the way he wove his life story into his hiking journey. It worked together really well. The parts about the mushrooms were hilarious and honestly would make an adorable kids book

I love Sam so I wanted to really love this book but it was kinda boring. It was definitely a 2.5 rounded up. It did feel like something he did need to write for himself and I really respect that. Him talking to mushrooms was some how cringy, funny, and cute at the same time. I hope he writes another book in the future.

Sam Heughan is best known as the male main character in the popular television series ‘Outlander’. Knowing how much professionalism Sam puts into acting, it was obvious his memoir “Waypoints” was going to be equally as polished and expertly executed.

I enjoyed how his story was told between the past and present and how his honest and often brutal recount of how he’s arrived at this point in his life (all 42 young years 6ft 3in of him) corralled into his present - portraying emotion, empathy and integrity but also at times happiness and enjoying a bit of fun along the way.

He doesn’t walk the 96 mile long, rugged West Highland Way alone, apart from the company of thousands of readers attracted to this book, he meets a variety of people and this makes for an interesting read and together with the beautiful Scottish landscape, this deeply personal voyage is the perfect armchair travel book for fans of Sam, Scotland and autobiographical memoirs alike.
