For me, this book was very much a "don't judge a book from the front cover" moment for me. I had put off picking it up at bookstores because the cover never appealed to me, but I so wish I had given this book a chance earlier. I love the concepts of the book, I love the world building and the depth of the characters, and I love how it goes deep into understanding the theological background of the world and psychology of the characters. Though I found some parts of the book predictable, I still found myself fully immersed in the story-telling from the strong female protagonist's viewpoint (even if she did frustrate me also at some points).

this book is fucked up but it was also beautiful.
my favorite thing about this book was when Atlan and Rin finally started to understand each other. the reader got the sense that they finally know each other and that rin understands the person that Atlan is but it also makes it so the reader still doesn't know much about Atlan and that fact is really cool to me. the bloody and detailed massacres weren't great and made me a little uncomfortable but after that, the book always gets better. I BOTH LOVE AND HATE HOW ATLAN DIED! sacrificing himself for the greater good or whatever was great and I can't be mad at him but the fact that they just wrote his death as walking into a troop of federation soldiers was ANNOYING! it's stated that he does die but like WTH!

Beautifully written and culturally expansive- the world building and magic system are fascinating. There are some very dark and upsetting moments that feel difficult to read, but the overall result is a great read with incredibly complex characters.

It is my opinion that this book was absolutely brilliant. It was a saga from beginning to end and there is still two books to come. It was probably the most brutal book I’ve ever read, but a great study of humanity and morality delivered in a developed historical-fantasy package. It was unusual for me in that it had no romance and relied entirely upon your caring for the world as seen through the main character’s eyes. On the plus side, without romance, platonic and familial-like relationships get their chance to shine in a way that I feel is often lacking in literature. Definitely check the trigger warnings and only read this as allowed by your mental health. There is a lot of gorey descriptions, especially those relating to war.
