I loved reading this book! The illustrations and the story do a great job of explaining the good and the bad of what The Rey’s experienced during a challenging time that will always be remembered in history without it being too scary for kids to read.
I have always loved Curious George and was curious to know more about the backstory. I didn’t realize everything that The Rey’s had to deal with in order to survive and escape. I  am happy that they are one of the lucky ones that survived to share excellent children’s books with the world! It makes me sad and curious though to think about what could have been shared if they had not been tragically killed by truly evil people.
I also enjoyed reading and seeing  the pictures of places I have visited myself In Paris. I kind of wish they hadn’t changed the monkey’s name from Fifi to George but I love the name George as well.

My children and I are reading this book as we study France and WWII. I thought the entire book was thoughtfully illustrated (in a style reminiscent of H.A. Rey, much to my delight.) The story is simply told, which makes it an excellent book for older children and adolescents, with many interesting facts. One of my favorite tidbits of information was that "Curious George" was almost "Curious Fifi."

This book was SO FUN to talk about with students.
Basically, I hooked them with Curious George ("DOES ANYONE RECOGNIZE THIS MONKEY? CAN ANYONE IDENTIFY THIS MONKEY? DOES ANYONE KNOW WHO THIS MONKEY IS?"), cracked a corny joke ("Is this a real monkey? No, silly! This is a DRAWING of a monkey!") and then told the story on pages 44-45. Depending on the ages of the kids (3rd grade? 6th grade?) I'd give more or less context regarding WWII.

It really is an unbelievable story (they're actually making a documentary about it and everything!).
I was initially put off by the almost-poetry-like layout of the text on the page, but found the story so engaging it completely stopped bothering me. I love love loved the inclusion of lots of primary sources. It's actually very surprising how well the primary sources, original illustrations, and Rey illustrations blend together. And I don't remember it being made clear who was responsible for the layout here - was it the illustrator, or some other unnamed graphic designer? If it was a third party, they deserve serious kudos.

Killer killer killer yes.

Book #76 Read in 2018
The Journey That Saved Curious George

This tells the true story of how the creators of Curious George had to escape from the Nazis and how they ended up living in America. It also shows the evolution of Curious George. A quick read, this would make a nice read out loud in elementary classes. I borrowed this book from the public library.

After meeting Louise personally and hearing her talk about putting the pieces together in completing the Reys' story I couldn't wait to read the whole story. Who knew Curious George had such a history?!

An amazing true story about the creators of Curious George. They literally bicycled their way out of France when the nazis invaded. Finally ended up in New York and the rest is history. An awesome read!
