Thoroughly entertaining for fans of Outlander, Men in Kilts or even just the country of Scotland. Part history lesson and mostly hysterical banter between two very entertaining and philanthropic actors. Laugh out loud funny.
funny informative inspiring fast-paced

Informative about Scotland’s history, as well as entertaining.

I read this book for 2 reasons, 1) it fit the 2021 PopSugar challenge category of a "book associated with your favorite person, place or thing (Scotland & travel)" AND 2) I wanted to. I have read all the Outlander books, watched the series and am currently watching Men In Kilts and I love it all! I don't follow Sam & Graham on Twitter, but I do follow Diana (and she retweets a lot of their stuff) so I have seen the banter between these two giant kids and knew what to expect.

These guys crack me up! About half-way through they mention Monty Python and I realized that is kinda how they act and probably why I love all this. It's silly and stupid and yes, a bit childish, but these guys genuinely like each other and you can see it from them picking on each other (my group of friends do the same thing). I believe that a lot of the negative reviews on this book are more of a reflection of the reviewer and not about the book and/or content.

Since this book was written after the filming of Men In Kilts, it gives us more info about certain locations and events in Scotland than what we get in the show. Some reviewers thought it was just revisiting Outlander sites and while some of it was, it also was showing how the people of Scotland lived and adapted (or didn't) to the changing times around them and yes, a lot of changes did happen after 1745, the Jacobite rebellion and the events in Outlander.

My DNA proves that my ancestors are from the UK (mainly England & Scotland) which makes books like this more interesting to me on a personal level and like both Sam & Graham, more interested in finding out about my lineage and where my family was from. I read this book because I prefer actually reading books, but with them narrating it I could understand how this might be more enjoyable as an audiobook.

DID NOT FINISH: 75%

I just couldn't do it. Got about 75% of the way through before calling it quits. I have a feeling that if Graham wrote this on his own, there would be way more Scottish history and none of Sam's annoying banter/demeaning names for Graham.

I read the Clanlands Almanac: Seasonal Stories from Scotland first, which I'm glad I did. Otherwise I probably wouldn't have read it at all. That one has the Scottish history and clan stories I was looking for. (The banter is there too, but toned down a bit. It was only slightly annoying.) So if that's what you thought would be here, read that instead.

On the other hand, if what you want is stupid one-upmanship and pranks and drinking stories, then this is the book for you.

Fun and witty! A look at Sam & Graham outside of the Outlander set. Humor & history - a winning combination!

Quite often funny, and always interesting. It was a lot like sitting around the campfire listening to your favorite family members telling stories. They really make you feel like you're sitting right there with them as they relate the history of Scotland, their own lives, and the making of Outlander. A terrific read!

Loads of fun - it's like you're sitting a pub table listening to stories of two good friends being told over many drams.

This was a book club book - I'm not familiar with the shows the authors have been in and had never heard of them -- if I had maybe I would have enjoyed it more. I thought it would be more about Scottish history and less of them sparring each other with their self-indulgent wit.

I really wanted to love this but I just did not. I do think that if somebody was a big Outlander fan they might enjoy it more.

Enjoyed this fun romp through Scotland's 'gory' past. Probably even more enjoyable for Outlander fans. A kinda buddy road trip in print. I'll have to watch the TV show next.
