The Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes by Arthur Conan Doyle

Poor Doyle. He so clearly wanted to be done with these characters years ago, and the public just wouldn't let him. I feel like he is TRYING to jump the shark with some of these stories, specifically the ones without Watson and The Creeping Man. However, the others were enjoyable, and I liked that Holmes was more overtly appreciative of Watson in this book than he had been before.

I can’t lie, this instalment was a tad lacklustre compared to the previous ones, but it’s forgivable considering that it’s the last one in the series, and Arthur Conan Doyle was most probably losing steam.

Forever grateful to be able to experience the endless adventure, wit and humour of these stories that feel like home, and these characters, Holmes and Watson, who feel like (very uncanny) friends.

"You can file it in our archives, Watson.
Some day the true story may be told."

A few odd ones in here, but gems like "The Illustrious Client" and "The Sussex Vampire" (vampires, really? Yes. Yes indeed!), not to mention possibly my favorite Holmes moment of all time in "The Three Garridebs" combine to make this possibly one of my favorite collections of Holmes. And that's saying a lot.
I mean, Watson is shot, and then this quote. "It was worth a wound; it was worth many wounds; to know the depth of loyalty and love which lay behind that cold mask. The clear, hard eyes were dimmed for a moment, and the firm lips were shaking. For the one and only time I caught a glimpse of a great heart as well as of a great brain. All my years of humble but single-minded service culminated in that moment of revelation." -The Three Garridebs.

And then Holmes' fantastic "It is well for you {the villain}. If you had killed Watson, you would not have got out of this room alive."

And the best bromance in all of literature lives on.

The final collection in the canon. I felt heartbroken. Actual loss. Which is weird because I didn't feel it this much even when I read the actual death. But the book itself has some good stories. Some felt very short and rushed, but some were brilliant as ever. Again, we see a change in the narration's perspective which was fresh and decidedly unique. And a pleasant surprise! Definitely read.

Felt a little disjointed. I was also familiar with some of the stories already so only really skimmed over them. Holmes doesn't feature at all in most of them.

I was surprised and disappointed that the 2011 edition still kept the n-word in. I appreciate that the original text needs to be respected and that we should read bearing in mind the time and context... The male chauvinism is to be expected and impossible to remove from the original works, but really I see no excuse for that language.

Otherwise, intriguing tales and mysteries aplenty.

"I have been sluggish in mind and wanting in that mixture of imagination and reality which is the basis of my art."

"I received one of Holmes' laconic messages: 'Come at once if convenient-- if inconvenient come all the same.' S. H."

"... but it is easy to be wise after the event."
