I found this book to be a refreshing take on dragons. Though we never see a living one until the end of the book . This book and Ward, the MC, reminds me of the Wheel of Time series but on a smaller scale.
I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the series.

I actually really enjoyed this. It's high fantasy with a lot of tropes running around which ought to have made it boring, but the people and relationships and surprises are good enough that it's engaging instead.
Props on women being capable of killing and ruling and sadism, etc.
As opposed to fainting and fluttering and dying tragically.

Ahahahahaha. Sometimes I wish I could turn off my writer's critiquing view while I read. This was one of the times. You can totally tell it's an early work? The female characters all fall into odd caricatures, and the pacing is uneven.
But even with this, I laughed so much? It was a lot of fun, interspersed with horrified "wait, that character arc just did WHAT?". (It ends on fun, in case you worried.)

Reading this book was so fantastic, I loved the characters and the world and the scope of the world and the politics, and I need to read the sequel now!

A bit surprised that the protagonist in this series is a male when Briggs' main characters are usually female. Surprised, but not unhappy - it was a nice change. Ward is a great character and I found him to be extremely likeable.
I was also use to the urban setting of her previous novels, but Briggs' deft story telling is matched by great world building.
She's always been exceptional in writing characters, so it wasn't a stretch that I found myself quickly emotionally invested in not only Ward's plight, but the supporting characters as well.

This book had the potential to be so much more but just didn't go anywhere interesting with any of the concepts. It was just dark and depressing

I liked Ward a lot. Pretending to be stupid to stay alive was a nice consistent plot point snd made for a good character arc. Looking forward to book two.
