The last 25% was good and has me hopeful for a solid book the even though this is still not my vibe.

5 ☆

This book brought the series up to a 5 star for me, I absolutely loved it. Getting to explore further into the minds of the characters was a huge plus. The politics and world building were wonderful.

I particularly enjoy having dual POVs between the "heros" and "villains". I expected that to end when Erida's betrayal was revealed in book 1, but continuing with her perspective adds a another layer com complexity to the story that I've really enjoyed. It's been interesting watching her spin more and more towards Taristan's side, and I am curious if she will eventually lose her grip on things.

Overall, I loved this book and can't wait for the next!

I’m in pain. I haven’t stopped crying yet. Every time I read a Victoria Aveyard book I prepare myself for pain but it is never enough. I don’t think I’ll be able to emotionally recover from everything Victoria Aveyard has done to me. I need the next book in my hands right now! Anyway, emotional rant aside, the book was blooming brilliant, just like all of Victoria Aveyard’s books. The worldbuilding in this series is mind-blowing and I can’t quite get my head around how Aveyard created this amazing world. It’s so in depth and there is so much happening all the time, it’s hard to comprehend in the best of ways. This series reminds me so much of The Lord of the Rings and I love that! The characters are all amazing with their own individual strengths and I love them all and will be fearing for them every day until I have book 3 in my grasp. There is a hint of romance emerging, two great slow-burns, and I’m excited to see where they go in the future. Another thing I love about this series is the villains. I don’t love the villains at all, I despise them, but I like that in a book. I like villains that I can hate and root against and cheer for their downfall, and though I spend most of Erida’s perspective raging at her, it’s still interesting to read. I highly recommend this series and Victoria Aveyard’s other books and will be impatiently waiting for the next book!

DID NOT FINISH

got bored

I’m switching back and forth between 3 and 4 stars as I’m trying to write this review because I truly don’t know. We’ll go with 3.5 rounded up to 4 for GR.

I did enjoy this book more than book one which is really rare for a sequel. I think I’d had more time to connect with the characters, so I enjoyed it more. This book was almost entirely filler and preparing for a big battle as any book two of a trilogy is. And as always, Victoria Aveyard has left us in horrible suspense until the next book.

I’ve seen reviews that feel the opposite of I do, but I truly love Coryane and Andry. Yes, they’re teenagers and young and naive, but they’re both growing into themselves and figuring out who they are and I’m obsessed. Their relationship is something I’m looking forward to in the next book.

I’ve loved Dom since book one so no surprise that he’s still one of my favorites. Sweet little mother hen of all his children. His protectiveness of Coryane and Andry is one of my favorite things from this series. And the fact that it’s evolved from necessity of keeping Coryane alive to him actually caring about her.

Sorasa has finally drawn me in. I can’t say she’s at the top of the list of who I’d be most upset if they died (because we know one of them is going to tragically die in book three because that’s how it goes), but I do love her and her strength as she also protects the group.

I have to say I do laugh a little every time they call themselves The Companions because it just feels so high school, but anyway. I do love their little found family <3

Erida and Taristan truly make me just feel shivers all over and that is the beauty of Victoria Aveyard’s writing. She knows how to write a villain and it gives me the chills in a good and bad way. You can see where Erida and Taristan find their motivation, but you don’t see where they’re justifying everything they’re doing.

I’m truly upset the next installment of these series doesn’t have a release date yet because I am in pain from the ending.

For me, this book was a vast improvement on the first. With the bulk of the worldbuilding and setup completed, this book had the opportunity to dive deeper into the characters, the magic, and the action of the story. Although I still feel that the world is a bit overwhelmingly complicated and there are perhaps too many characters and POVs, I enjoyed this book thoroughly. Corayne, Andry, Sorasa, and Dom have all grown into really enjoyable protagonists (I LOVE Andry), and Erida and Taristan became far more menacing and interesting villians. I’m very much looking forward to the next installment!
