The Penderwick family charm still holds fast, but several things made this installment not quite as good as the first two:
-We already had a dose of romance in the last book, and now we have yet ANOTHER with Jane mooning over Dominick, Aunt Clare reminiscing her past loves, and Jeffery wondering who he'll marry. Kids really don't need that much romance in their reading, and we hardly need to marry off every Penderwick there ever was.
-Jane's new obsession with courtly love was eyeroll worthy, all the way through.
-Alec and Jeffery: that's a pretty unbelievable coincidence.

This is another wonderful book by Jeanne Birdsall about the Penderwicks. It made me laugh and it even made me a bit teary eyed. I enjoyed every bit of it and so did my little sisters. That is part of the beauty of this book, and the ones that came before, people of all ages can enjoy them.

I've realized that this is probably my least favorite Penderwick book - but because it's a Penderwick book it is still of course an enjoyable read. It just doesn't hold my interest quite as much as the previous ones, and without spoiling anything, I've never really felt that certain character dynamics and reactions are explained enough.

I liked it, but for me this was the least engaging of the three Penderwicks books I've read so far. Still lots to enjoy though.

Too much with the crushes and pairing everyone off. It was bad enough in book two, I didn't think it would continue in book three (esp. without the 13 yo sister, who is "off-screen" so to speak and not present for the bulk of the book). They are only 11 and 12! Eleven and twelve year olds have so much more to them and I'd have preferred to see more mishaps, adventures and discoveries that have nothing to do with romance. Disappointed. Alternately, if the characters were 14-15-16, I'd have been more ok with the plot lines.

I find my heart must belong to any book that contains lines like this: "Jane had occasionally tried to develop her own hidden depths, but she never could decide what to hide and how far down."

To quote C.S. Lewis “A children's story that can only be enjoyed by children is not a good children's story in the slightest.”
Every time I'm tempted to feel a little foolish for not only reading but so thoroughly enjoying children's books (such as this one) I remember that quote and it makes me feel better.
The Penderwicks books are a great kids series, and I'm enjoying discovering them as an adult. 4 sisters, numerous friends, pets, neighbors, and other assorted relatives makes for all kinds of adventures. This particular book covers a summer vacation in Maine with 3 of the 4 girls and their aunt. Fun read!
