The good:
The story is sweet. The mystery was interesting if not exciting.
The bad:
Present tense
Monotone narration on the audio book
The sentiment was a bit too sappy for me
Slow and repetitive
Anachronism: you did not need a passport to enter Canada from the United States in the 1960’s.
I don’t like when people speak of a pregnancy as having a baby in her “stomach”. If you don’t want to say “uterus”, you could try “belly”.
I liked the story, but I did not like the book.

The second half was much better. A one of a kind book, a missing girl and trying to put the story together.

Loved everything about this book! No notes. Magical elements, sisterly love, back and forth time lines, grief and loss, mystery and a love story. I only hope they turn it into a movie.

I don’t love World War II books because they are usually just so sad and I prefer happier stories. I picked this up for a book club and was pleasantly surprised that it focused less on the war and more on the mystery of Flora Lea’s disappearance. It is a cozy read, being set in Britain’s Autumn season and I enjoyed the imagery of both London and the British countryside.
While I wouldn’t truly call this magical realism, there are parts that feel like magic and there are moments that were filled with whimsy. I didn’t know how it would all come together and I only saw the twist coming right before it happened.
As a romance reader at heart, that is my only disappointment. That part of this story just didn’t go the way I wanted but I still think it was a lovely story. If you like cozy suspense with a hint of magic, give this one a shot.
Content Notes: Closed door romance

This book just scratched the right itch in me. I love historical fiction, I love good endings, I love a sense of adventure and mystery, I love smiling while reading. That being said, this book isn’t revolutionary. I also felt the ending was veryyyy dragged out and oftentimes things happened for that were too hand-wave-y and were obviously for plot convenience. But I still really enjoyed the read.
Graphic: War
Moderate: Child death
Minor: Pregnancy
I devoured this book in just two days! The writing is exquisite, set against the backdrop of World War II when children were evacuated from their homes to live with strangers to escape the Blitz. The story vividly captures the trials faced by two sisters and their inventive ways of coping with such a challenging period.
