I'm not leaving a star rating, simply because I didn't finish this book. All I will say is that this isn't the book for me, and I'm moving on.

I usually enjoy Sherrilyn Kenyon books. But almost didn't finish this one as it went on too long. How many times does a character have to be betrayed and saved? I almost quit reading her books because of the graphic abuse and I'm glad that has changed. Her main characters still have horrific childhood and face abuse but it is no longer graphically detailed. As other reviewers have noted this book jumped a lot in time and the timeline was confusing. Could not some indicator be made that a year or two has passed? Other chapters paralleled each other which left the reader confused and wondering what was going on. It is possible to indicate that the events in one chapter are happening concurrently with the events in the following chapter.

If I must be honest, I was annoyed that things didn't pick up where they left off. But in the end I must admit it was needed to truly understand Jullian and where he came from.

I got this book from a friends bookstore when I went to an event they were holding. I did not know anything about it, including that it was number nine in a series. But, luckily for me, it turns out that it doesn't even really matter that it was number nine in the series. There are some pieces of background that I'm sure I missed out on by not reading the first eight, but it didn't prevent me from being able to follow and enjoy the story. The main man, Dagger, has been been the villain in so many peoples stories that being a hero to someone is something he can't quite comprehend. But he grows into it as he battles through pain and prejudice for the love of a lady. The world is really intriguing, the characters are all pretty interesting, and it seems like nothing ever goes the way anyone planned (which I like). This book was long and I struggled to really grok everything at the beginning, but it held my attention the whole time and it definitely convinced me to try the rest of the series (starting at the beginning this time).

When I read who was the "hero" in this book, I though "here goes another Styxx". But man was I wrong! This books was just incredible, I love how we see this whole new side of the story! I love the fact that Jules just let go of the past and accepted his new family and made peace with his past. I can't wait for the next book on these series. I also remember all of the children in Devyn's book and now I understand who they came to be Tavali!

Another great book by another great writer.
